TaylorMade CB vs. R11

Currently have 2008 Cobra S9 irons and I'm looking to upgrade to a more attractive looking GI iron. I've hit both and didn't really notice much difference in performance except the CB was a little shorter because of the 1 degree difference in loft on the 6 iron. CB felt a little better because it is forged, but not enough to justify choosing it. I'm mostly concerned about forgiveness. I didn't have a problem with the CB, but has anyone had more extensive experience with the 2?

Have demo'd both quite a few times recently.
I would say that the R11 was very marginally longer, but as you mention the lofts are 1* stronger and if you were bothered about this you could order the CBs 1* strong and I'm sure you'd get the same distance out of them.
To me the CB definitely felt better than the R11 and just looks better, but this is purely from a cosmetic point of view, the view at address is almost identical.

Perhaps i'm a bit cynical, but to me the R11 is just a re-branded CB.
Not that this makes it a bad club, in fact I think it's a very good club, it just doesn't offer anything different to the CB.

The CB's are a slightly smaller, forged face version of the R11. Slightly less forgiving, but probably not enough to make a significant difference between the two unless the forgiveness makes THAT much difference to you.

I haven't hit the R11's, but I went from R9's to the CB's. The CB's seem just as forgiving with a very similar head size as the R9's. I've been playing some of my best golf with the CB's and have been very happy with them and do not plan to get rid of them anytime soon. I got the CB's with the stock DG XP shaft whereas the R9's I had before had the KBS Tour 90. The XP shafts are slightly heavier (10g I think) but performance is pretty close. I love KBS shafts )both the Tour and the Tour 90) but I have been very happy with the XP. It seems to be a really nice shaft for people that want something a little heavier than the 90-100g lightweight steel offerings but don't want something as heavy as a KBS Tour/PX/DG. Good luck with your decision!

I have owned both of these irons. There is a big difference to me between them, the CB is semi soft feeling but lacks everything else. The R11 is still soft feeling like the R7/R7TP. Distance wise for me the R11 Blows away the CB by a huge amount. To me there is no comparison get the R11 you will not be disappointed. Top-line wise the R11 is thicker in eh long irons and thinner in short irons which is nice. it is not overbearing thick though. It is just a much nicer iron then the CB's.

If you are mostly concerned about forgiveness, you should hands down get the R11. I play the R11, they are plenty forgiving for an iron that still has a classic profile at address, and although i haven't hit the CB, my friend who is a good ball striker returned his CB's after 2 rounds because he found them too unforgiving. I also think the R11 actually looks better, but that is subjective.

Just wondered if you played the same shaft in both the R11 and the CB?
Has anyone else played both with the same shaft in and noticed this? For me the 6 iron in the R11 was maximum 5 yards longer ( with DG S300 in both).

I played the exact same set in both irons and i was heck 20 yards longer with R11. if not longer with them, no it was same grips. shafts and lofts. nothing different with them except the forged faces.

Blimey! That is some difference considering the only spec difference is 1* in loft.
Just goes to show how important trying them out is as results will differ from person to person.
Are you happy with the R11s in general and versus anything else you've had a go with from other manufacturers. (thinking of clubs aimed at a similar target - JPX pro from Mizuno for example)

  • 10 months later...

Demo'd the R11's and old/sold the CB's. The CB's were a fine club. Muted and soft feeling. Distance control was difficult for a forged club. I'd hit some pure and some not so pure that would on occasion just fly 15 yards past my normal distances. Sold for what I bought them for and the new recipient loves them. Playing RazrX Tours currently and found them long, high trajectory, and easy to hit. I still will hit a couple here and there that will simply outfly my intent but they're a decent club that seem versatile to me with my ever changing swing...
