"Not your typical PGM question"

Recommended Posts

I've always wanted a career in the golf industry, i look forward every day to learning more about the game whether it is watching, playing or reading about the sport. When i graduated HS i attended a community college a few miles from my house. Now that i have my associates, its time to choose where to finish my Bachelors. All along i wanted to join the PGM program at the University of Central Oklahoma.

So my question is…… is it too late apply for the program considering i have two years under my belt, would i end up spending more time in college this way(wouldn't be a bad way to spend it.. golfing….). Has anybody done this? or ran into a situation like this. I can't put into words how eager i am to work in the golf industry, and of course this isn't the only way. Although it sure helps, and would be a hell of a lot of fun.

Any advice would be appreciated from anybody in PGM programs/coaches/advisors/ etc..

Thanks, Connor

It's not too late to apply. When I went thru ('98-'03) we had a couple guys come in that had an associates in another major. Back then, you had to have 5 semesters of internships (along with the PGA course work and university course work over the 5 year program). Since they had 2 years of school done, they did a semester of school then hit the internships pretty hard over the next couple of years.

You can certainly enroll later in the game, but just like anything else - you have to work 2 times as hard to catch up.

I was under the impression that this would be the case, having to work a little more to catch up. Im not complaining! Thanks for the advice!

Not sure what it's like at UCCO, but I would imagine it's similar to how things go here at Nebraska. Every year we get a handful of guys who transfer in with one or two years under their belt already. Our director helps with their scheduling to move them through the program as quickly as possible (can be tricky with some of the PGA's rules). Typically if you have college credits and transfer in you can be done with the classwork in three years and then finish up any additional internship requirement after that.

I say you should go for it. Definitely not too late, and I think going through one of the PGM universities is by far the best option to set you up for a successful career in the golf industry.
