Recommend a ball for a "whatever ball" kind of guy

First things first, I am not the type of player to get too attached to a company. Every club in my bag is a different brand. I pretty much buy any ball I want at the time. I've played Mojos, both pro v's, taylormade pentas, Slazenger's. This season I want to switch things up and try specific balls. Any recommendations? I'm leaning towards the new nike rzn line and I've always loved the original pentas. Price is no issue as I have made connections with workers at my local shop.

ChromeSoft is a good all around ball that tends to spin less on linger shots. I think the Duo would do the same thing. There are people on here who love the SuperSoft (haven't hit it myself), and I have always been a fan of Chrome+.

If you take a look around you will find some great balls to try, and if you aren't someone who worries about the ball being available in a week or two, take a look at last year's offerings.

I played down in Myrtle Beach this past week, and I had a trial pack of the new Wilson Staff Duo Spin. After my Pro V's are gone, I am switching. Cheap and they perform.

I'm open to anything. I'm not too keen on any type of feel or performance. The big thing would be lower spin on long shots
[/quote]

Nike RZN Black has the best spin slope I've ever experienced.

Very low spin off woods, moderate spin off longer irons, excellent spin on wedges and short shots. If you have enough oomph to compress it well its worth a look. A very good ball but it does seem, from talking to buddies who have tried it, that the explosive distance seen by high speed players (lets call it 110+ on driver) isn't there on guys with lower swing speeds.

For example:

My buddy (8 handicap, about 110 +/-5 on the driver) says its a great ball but no longer than the chrome soft or srixon z-star line
Buddy #2 (11 handicap, about 100 on driver) says it feels hard and is shorter than his gamer, the 330-RX
My take (12 handicap, about 118 on driver) its the longest ball I've ever played off driver, blows past the chrome soft and ProV1 offerings

So if you are a fairly high swing speed player it seems to be fantastic. Good luck!

I'm pretty much the same as you. Unofficial 13 handicap (shoot mid 80's) but I don't know my swing speed. I carry my driver around 280 and my 8 iron around 155.

For a guy like you that doesn't commit to brands, but is probably most likely looking for consistent performance at an affordable price I would recommend the srixon z star X $30 bucks a dozen anywhere and you can find 2 dozens for $50 usually on the bay. Probably the most liked golf ball in that price range and they are pretty durable.

I would also like to comment on the RZN Black, its the lowest spin of any ball imo. Drives carry a bit further and the irons really fly off the face when struck well. It feels almost like a bouncy ball, in a good way. Its not easy to compress though, and feels like a rock on miss hits. Also has plenty of spin around the greens but may lack in feel compared to B330, Z-star XV.
B330 launches higher and with a bit more spin, but still penetrates the wind great.I find the Srixon XV very similar to the B330.

All in all I think the B330 or Srixon XV are better for my game, but at the same time compressing the RZN Black is a whole 'lotta fun.

I'm a high swing speed player, I played the Srixon XV last season in most conditions. However I took Mahamilto's advice and grabbed some RZN Black to try, and am planning to use it on a wet or damp course and shorter par 3's. I fight full wedge spin. Ball sucks back too far. It may end up replacing the Srixon XV, but we will see.

Now, if you want to be different, you could try the Rife V Motion which in one test was lower spinning than the RZN Black off the driver, but still produced more half wedge spin around the green if that's something you like.

I feel that the RZN black is the idea tour level ball for high swing speed midcappers.

Its all the spin slope for me. Some balls have a low spin slope, they have either high or low spin on virtually all shots. The ProV1 (non x) is this way for me, as was the chome + to a slighly lesser extent. Those two balls spin like crazy, but I feel my misses on driver end up way left. The RZN black has the highest spin slope I've ever seen, meaning the lowest (perceived... not confirmed on LM) spin on driver and pretty darn spinny on wedges. It doesn't have proV1 spin on wedges, its closer and maybe a touch less spinny than the prov1x with wedge, but it spins really well around the greens and I can back it up with a full 9 iron on down.

As a midcapper that doesn't get out enough, I am a fairly good player some days. I've been known to light it up, and on days like that the short iron, wedge, green side spin of the RZN black really helps me score. On days I'm spraying it a bit with the driver or long irons, the RZN black being very low spin (for a tour ball) with those clubs really keeps me from losing a boat load of strokes. It's a win-win for me. Help where I need it on both the good and bad sides (or days) of my game.

Contrast to when I played ProV1 (or lesser extent the X), If I was playing well the greenside spin increase vs the rzn black didn't really improve my game, I maybe had one or two shots a round with it where the extra spin helped, on the other hand, if I was spraying, the ProV1 seems way more likely to go another 10-15 yards offline, and I lose way more stokes that way.

Maybe others fit that model, but I think this is why ball choice for mid caps is tough: you are good enough to utilize spin, but not so good that the extra spin won't potentially cost you.

For me the RZN black maxes my spin needs with short clubs, and minimizes the punishment I may get with long clubs.

Good luck!
