As a coach I look for the following:

1. Willingness to learn and ability to accept criticism.

2. Desire to be the best player you can.

3. Natural Ability

4. Ability to control your emotions

5. Creativity.

I know that freshman are nowhere near where they could be as far as potential goes, so I look for people that can be molded into very good to great golfers. On that note, go out there, have fun, and just swing away without thinking too much about the outcome. Play your best and forget the rest.

Obviously try and shoot the best possible score that you can but keep in mind that this is not the most important thing to the coach. He will want to know that you can produce good scores under pressure and in competition but he also knows you are a freshmen and will likely be with the team for 4 years. If he likes the way you handle yourself on the course and that you are a hard worker he will be impressed more than an even par round in a simple tryout round. Just try to show the coach that you have the complete package and don't focus ONLY on your score. Also, if you have any tournament experience, etc... be sure to convey that information to either the coach or the kids already on the team that you are playing with, this will only help you as a lot of kids trying out often don't have that much experience before their freshmen year. Good Luck!

In addition to some of the above advice....

'Make no excuses....ever'

Ties in with your attitude - but one thing that always rubs me wrong is people who 'always' have an excuse...equipment, not feeling well, weather, shoes, pain, bad day.....

Do your best on every shot, quietly show your intensity by delivering and staying calm and focused in all situations.

I would start with the most expensive bag of clubs you can afford, mostly Japanese forged stuff or custom ground blades, also make sure your have them in a staff bag. Make sure the shaft in your driver costs at least $300, wear lots of JL clothing and bring your own caddy. Stand on the first tee and tell everyone how you are a big proponent of the bomb and gouge theory of golf, and tell them you replace your wedges at least once a week so you can spin the ball out of 12 inch rough. Make sure you have a list of the top instructors and acadamies you have visited, and make sure you can name drop at least 3 pros you have played a round with and taken a little cash from. Let everyone know what your swing speed numbers are and launch angle is and be able to quote most of 5 Lessons by heart. :russian_roulette:

Seriously take 'er one shot at a time, dont get flustered when you hit a bad shot, we all hit them, keep the ball in play and practice your short game, it will keep you in the running.

I agree with a lot of the posters so far. Dress the part A#1. That will be the first thing a coach notices. Nice dockers and golf polo for sure. Second...make sure you use good golf etiquette! No throwing clubs, kicking your bag, bad language and so forth. Fix your ball marks and a couple of others on every green and replace your divots. Just show respect for the game. Follow those rules and even if you play bad the coach might think he can turn you into a good player. Coaches are always looking for kids that are coachable.

Dont cuss or throw any clubs. Most coaches want a couple freshmen on the squad to expand their knowledge of tournament golf. They would rather have the future than 9 or 10 juniors/seniors when they only need 6 good upperclassmen. Other wise dont be a jerk and the older guys should like you oh and play well haha.

Great topic. I was lucky enough to play 4 years of varsity golf in high school (20 years ago). Last night I went out for the first 9 holes of the year and found myself behind a bunch of local HS kids trying out for their team. They were playing kind of slow, and the coach came over to apologize to our group, adding "they are all a WRECK." Which leads me to my first bit of advice. Don't take it too seriously, it's just golf. It took me a lot of years to realize I play my best when I don't get too worked up about it. Put your energy and focus into practicing, then try to just "let it happen" when you're on the course. As you said yourself, play one shot at a time. Don't look at the scorecard and try to plot out your scores for the next few holes. If you feel yourself getting stressed, take some deep breaths and relax. Focus on what you can control, and don't get wrapped up in what the other guys are doing.

At this point, your goal is to make the team. You'll do that by avoiding dumb mistakes and risky shots. The one thing my coach harped on was "if you're in trouble, just get the ball back in play." The most profound thing I ever heard about competitive golf came from my coach: "Just play bogey golf. If you can do that, the other guy has to shoot par to beat you." I had the opportunity to play all 4 years because I was pretty damn good at playing bogey golf CONSISTENTLY, with occasional bouts of par golf.

Be prepared to play. Most importantly, get some food and water in you before you tee off. Put snacks in your bag. I can't overstate how important this is. A lot of guys will bonk after three holes when hunger sets in. Be prepared for all weather. Buy rain gloves and a stocking cap! If fatigue is an issue for you, don't be too proud to use a pull cart. You've got to do everything you can to be as fresh on #18 as you were on #1.

Lastly, your schoolwork has to come first. If you can stay on top of your studies and pull down good grades, you'll have so much more mental energy in your tank for golf. Not to mention it will pay dividends 4 years from now if you're a great student and a good golfer. Best of luck to you. It sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders already!
