What do you think? And how do you know? (2 questions)

Would a 15-20 handicap golfer benefit by using irons that are for better players? Or the irons that are a step up from game improvement.

 

I wondered about this because today’s irons are so forgiving. How can a golfer really improve if he or she has equipment that hides their mistake? If I hit the heel on my old blades from the 90’s, it’s a shank. Today’s irons, I’m on the fairway just a bit short or it’s still really good heel shot.

 

Or when using that tour striker training aid. If you can hit that good with a smaller hitting area, you’ll improve your ball striking. I know I did..

 

Also, how do you know what kind of iron sole type does a player need if he’s a sweeper? Are those irons with fatter soles for diggers? And the opposite for sweepers, thinner soles? I’m just guessing.

Lot of it would probably depend on your practice time. If you can't get out to practice, you'll probably want to stick more with the super game improvemrnt clubs.

I have never hit an iron where I didn't immediately know where on the face I hit the ball. SIG, GI, CB, or MB. The crazy thing is I pretty much know the contact by the time I am at P3, but then it is too late.

Edit: It was probably six years into playing that the awareness was developed, but I started playing at eight and it wasn't until 15 that I was really contact aware. Given that I was 15, I think saying aware is a stretch.

I was just in the process of getting fit for the first time against my 14 year old clubs after being under the Indian/Arrow premise for all those years and after the fitters tinkered using the latest equipment, it seemed that I never really lost distance on my mishits whereas I might hit my 7 as much as 25 yards shorter on a bit of a mishit (consider 4 degrees weaker too) compared to the latest clubs. Ball flight and dispersion was just a big change - I didn't expect to see such a difference. Seemed like the carry yardages were within a window that was much, much smaller than my current clubs.

I played G10s to a 2 handicap. Its wrong to say that you can't tell when you mishit a SGI. I sure could tell when I hit a bad shot with a G10. If you pay attention to your swing, your feel and your result you can tell exactly where you've hit each ball on the face.

 

Really the only difference between a blade, players iron, GI or SGI is the way the club gets the job done. You can play to scratch golf with any of them. It depends on your swing and what you want out of the club on each shot. Don't blame your handicap or your results on the "type" of club you play. They all get the job done.

Irons don't matter much.I'm a 13 index and have played with GI irons,old blades and now currently forged heads(not total blades).Does not change my scoring or ballstriking one bit.
