Getting new irons w/ different shafts, what to do about my wedges?

Recommended Posts

I am about to pull the trigger on a combo set of AP2/AP3 and the shaft that worked best for me in my fitting is the Project X LZ in 6.0.

I got a new set of Muira wedges a few years back and put the same shafts in them as I have in the irons I am replacing (regularly Project X in 5.5). I love my wedges and am very comfortable with them so I don’t really want to mess with them. Should I be concerned about this difference or just let it slide?

Thanks and very curious to hear how others deal w/ having different shafts in their wedges vs. their irons.

It wont make a difference. If you play them well already, you'll keep playing them well. You'll get every response under the sun in here, many do both (play the same shafts through the entire set, or have irons and wedges different).

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

I prefer a slightly heavier shaft in my wedges, but in all honesty the difference is minimal; especially for you as you are going for a very similar shaft.

For me you are more likely to notice the difference in the lofts from your old set you your new ones - I think about 2 degrees in your PW - so your 51 degree might be a bit close for ideal gapping now.

I tried a full set of irons including the wedges with the PX 5.5. I found the 5.5 too soft for the wedges. Just my own observation here with no science to support. I’ve returned to a typical wedge flex shaft and won’t go down that road again.

In your case, use what works for you. If you like the 5.5 in the wedges stick with it.

Don't be concerned. You're fine with the 5.5 in wedges and 6.0 in irons.

I have the same shafts on my wedges as in my irons. No problems here.

I'm assuming he's buying the 718 AP2 PW, which is 45*. The MP-53 (which he has listed in his profile at the time of this post) have a 46* PW. With the AP2 PW, I'd be more concerned that a 51* is a bit too far for gapping, though I don't think good gaps can be 100% determined by the lofts alone.

I may have misunderstood you, because you may have been thinking of the AP2 gap wedge, which is 50*.

WRX answer: Make sure you have the same shafts, adjust the swingweights so they are exactly two more than your new set wedge, bend the lofts after testing them with a trackman so your gapping is consistent, and grind the soles to adjust the bounce.

My answer: I play around with wedges and I am currently using Callaways that I love. Have no idea what shafts or swingweight they are. If you like your wedges stick with them as is.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and feedback, I sincerely appreciate it.

So the AP2 PW is actually 46 degrees per the Titleist website but for a combo set of AP2/AP3, Titleist recommends 4 and in 5 in AP3 and then the rest in AP2 but 1 degree strong which is what I’m doing so you are right, my PW will be 45 degrees. I am open to tweaking the loft on my wedges but I’m also open to getting the 50 degree gap wedge, plan to figure that part out once I get my clubs and start dialing in yardages. I really like my 51 degree wedge but those AP2s are so sweet and easy to hit I could easily see myself switching to the 50 degree gap instead, especially since my expectation is the AP2 will play a little longer than my MP53’s, even at the same loft.
