Strong Grip and Rolling Over = Bad Pull Hook (Lefty)

Hi Guys,

Need help. Left handed player that has always had a strong grip (use to be three knuckles ) and tried weaking it to a neutral grip last year without much success. Had a lesson last week where the pro tried to adjust the grip which starts out well but by the top of my backswing my hands are adjusting back into a strong grip. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to swing with a neutral grip.

 

Also i find my trail forearm rolling over my lead forearm after impact causing a pull hook.

 

Just need some advice if anyone else has gone through this. I am going to go to the range tomorrow and will try to get some video to upload (pictures are worth a thousand words).

How do you change your grip at the top of the backswing? Are you literally rotating the grip in your hands mid-swing?

Also, why do you need to change to neutral?

Lefty here also. Im no pro, but this is how I "feel" like my arms rotate. Intentional rolling is bad. I feel like the only rotation of the right arm I have is by virtue of my trail elbow folding.

I will say, from a chronic weak gripper, you will probably feel like you need to roll to square the face. With a stong grip, its much easier to keep the trail arm below the lead arm. To me, the weak grip swing feels much more armsy/handsy and the feeling of having to consciously release the club. You may be over doing it.

Not a golf professional and theres no swing video to work from, but as a fellow lefty here’s the swing thought that helped me overcome that same issue: Try to feel like you’re starting your downswing with your left elbow “bone”, the very tip of your left elbow, and try to keep both arms in front of your body through the entire swing. Obviously that not what it’ll really look like, but it’s my go-to thought when I’m struggling with cranking my wrists over too much. There’s nothing wrong with your strong grip, but a strong grip with too much conscious wrist action is dangerous. Take your focus off your wrists/grip and put in on your elbows and it may help.

Strong grip is almost never the impetus for a hook. Some of the strongest grips in pro golf hit fades.

 

I will say if you have a string grip and weaken it, you get a bandaid that doesn’t last long. Have to address why the hook is happening.

Thanks Monte. Definitely gives me something to think about at the range. I will post tomorrow and I think it’s definitely now my swing path more than grip

Monte is correct. I have a very strong grip and like to play a fade. The only time I start hooking the ball is when my lower hand gets overactive. The feel I look for, with my lower hand, going into impact is a stone-skipping motion. I don't want to feel my lower hand start to roll over until after impact.

UPDATE: Big thanks goes out to Monte for posting that video. Totally helped out like 110% percent. Last two range sessions I have had this week have been great and playing a little draw right now but the hook seems to have disappeared (for now). I find that swinging around my spine and bowing the lead wrist is helping hit a flush shot.
