MP-18 Low Spin and More Distance

I recently picked up a set of MP-18 heads to pair with Tour Issue X100 shafts. The set is 4-7 MP-18 SC and 8-PW MB. I have a SkyTrak and the spin numbers and distances seem off. I typically carry my PW 135 yards and see around 9k spin but with the MP-18 I am seeing carry distance of 145 and 8k RPM's. I got to thinking and the only thing that made sense to me was that the heads that I bought were bent strong.

 

While hitting some balls today, I picked up a friend's AP3 PW which is lofted at 43 degrees with S300 shafts and the spin and distance numbers were almost identical. So off I went to my local club builder to have him measure the lofts and they were bang on at standard. I have no idea what is going on so I thought I would get some input from you guys. The only things I have really changed is going with heavier swing weights than I am used to. Of course, we are just talking indoor, simulator numbers and not on course data where it really matters but I'm perplexed.

J - get on a trackman and get apples to apples. i don't trust skytrak numbers. at all.

 

you could always get your lofts checked but, i'd rather know the data for sure (lofts, lies, trackman figures, etc) -

Yeah, that will probably be my next step. I also feel like we (I) get too caught up in these simulator numbers and just need to see how the ball does on the golf course. Lofts were checked and are standard so that's not the issue.

hear me out -- i have a simulator where i live (it's a PGA Tour AboutGOLF sim); and it was telling me that i was hitting my 4i with 3100 spin...clearly that is out of the norm.

 

have you played your irons on course, in the wild? ie have you walked out to the 150y tag and hit balls to the middle of the green and seeing where the mean distance is for your wedge?

I am playing in my Thursday league tomorrow night. We have had a lot of rain so haven't been able to play lately.

All else being equal, 1k rpm of spin doesnt equate to 10yards of carry (maybe 1.5 yards).

Too much intersection with the turf maybe - slightly heavy hits upping launch and dropping spin?

Mats are weird. In my experience hitting balls off them drops spin. Gets weirder with range balls, the combination of which renders results kind of iffy.

 

Mp's aren't low spin clubs, but there is a difference in bounce and the natural weighting of the head. Could be the Mp's just suit you better from a design perspective. That's why I'm playing Mb's and not the Hot Metal irons I started the season with. Better striking = more distance and accuracy.

I grabbed my Nike VR Pro PW to compare and was still seeing 8k spin so definitely not the club.

I rented Trackman for an hour on friday and averaged 9759 with the Nike wedge. Definitely a SkyTrak inconsistency.
