Studio Style Elastomer Refurb

Hi All,

 

I picked up a Newport 2 Studio Style this week which is in pretty great condition. The only real issue with the putter is that the Elastomer that goes around the GSS insert has been pushed in along the top line (See pics attached).

 

I've read a few things which say bathroom caulk, or any kind of silicone sealant will be fine to use as a replacement, but I would like to know how people have removed the old Elastomer before replacing it with new.

 

Any tips would be much appreciated, and I'll obviously post pictures when I'm finished with it!

To do it right, take out the screws in the back of the head and pop the face out. Clean it out really good then put the face back on. Use whatever caulk you like best to fill the gap.

Thanks, this is what I thought. Have you any idea what size Allan key it is that the screws take? I torched a 2016 select recently and the screws holding the face in it were much smaller.

Have you done a studio select before?

I haven't. I have a muti size allan key. May have to heat the face a little as there should be some double sided tape there. Shouldn't be too hard to get apart. Some of the newer models use a 4-40 x 1/8 screw. Probably doesn't help at all though.

Ok thanks. I take it the tape behind the insert is there purely for holding it in place and not as a dampener like in the current select putters? Is it vital that the tape is replaced, or will the screws be fine alone?

Got an answer to the question above. A friend did the same thing and said he replaced it without the tape and it sounded awful. Put some 3m tape back behind it and it's perfect ?

First update picture below. Have replaced the grip with a brand new Black Baby T I managed to pick up and have sorted the Elastomer. Redo the paint fill next, and then it's finished.

Looking really good, out of curiosity how did you install the new elastomer, same as doing paint fill?

I've done quite a few of these and found that the best method is just to use your fingers with a nitrile glove and mineral spirits. Just apply the silicone straight from the tube and push it in the void around the insert with your fingers, putting some mineral spirits on the glove finger before doing so. The spirits take away some of the silicone's stickiness, help to smooth, and it makes clean up a breeze.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with it.

I used some bathroom silicone and just put it straight onto the gap around the insert. Then used a bank card to push it in and smooth it over, before using white spirit on some kitchen paper to wipe and clean it off.
