MP20 MMC vs JPX 919 Hot Metal Pro vs Apex 19 Pro

Has anyone been lucky enough to test these versus each other and what were your relative results?

I really, really want the MP20 MMCs but the price point vs the 919 HM Pros is not something to sneeze at, what with a wife and a couple wonderful kiddos. Haven't hit the Apex 19 Pros but I hear they're legit. Mostly interested in distance and forgiveness, the latter being a priority. I'm a 8.2 index so I'm not bad, but with as little as I get to practice anymore I feel like the extra help would be good.

Thanks in advance folks!

The HM Pro are basically game improvement with massive soles and high MOI. Different to the other two IMO. MMC is a small players cavity and will be less forgiving than the Apex pro but likely have a truer spin model. MMC feel best by a long shot followed by the Apex Pro and finally the HM Pro. It really depends on what you want and need in an iron. I’d say the more even comparison would be MMC vs 919Tour/Forged vs apex pro dot or X forged.

Agree with this. HM Pro are a lot like HM but with less offset. I have the HM Pro, and they are ridiculously long (strong lofts) and forgiving. I stayed with my Hogans as they were a better fit for me. I think the HM Pro would be better compared to regular Cally Apex, not the Pros. That being said, my HM Pros are on the Bay if you want to take a look

You are in luck. I just got fit and ended up with the Hot Metals (The pro's were not available in the shop I was in) I also hit the apex and the MP20 as well as the P790 and P760. I'm a high handicaper who was looking for a good looking iron that also was forgiving, gave me feedback, as well as a good sound.

I went in thinking I was going to walk out of there with the P790's or the Apex Pros... I walked out with the 919 Hot Metals and my dispersion proved I made the right selection. I actually had a tighter dispersion on the 760's but about 8-10 yards shorter than the Hot Metal's. The MP's were not good for me... I can't find the center consistently and i was really having issues getting the spin up as well as distance. They are gorgeous though.

I didnt like the sound off the P790's or the Callaway Apex Pro's. The 760 also did not sound great to me (again not hitting out of the center of the face.) The Hot metals were excellent forgiveness with toe strikes and bottom of the club (which is where I spend a lot of me time)

Really though, unless you are a standard fit on everything, you should go get fit. I ended up in a KBS C-Taper 130 X-Stiff and a toe up adjustment in my irons. The Hot metals are dead sexy BTW... You look down and barely notice they are CB

Did you test the blades or the MMC? Cause OP asked about the latter...

Congrats on the new sticks! Those shafts are telephone poles to most people!

Have you thought about finding a set of MP-18 MMC? I know it's one model older, but I really like mine and got them for a steal brand new still with plastic on the heads a little over a year ago. I would imagine there are deals out there on them now with the release of the MP-20 line.

I’m a former golf professional (20 yrs ago) who hasn’t played a whole lot in that 20 years. GI or not i see no reason to not get the HMP. Feel is awesome, look is very classic, Top line is a touch thick but the short irons are narrower at the heel than any of the other Mizuno i saw so they look much better to me. I put Recoils in them and am looking forward to gaming them for a long time. Goal this year is to get back to a sub 5 handicap with a much slower swing speed to save my back. By the way i bent them all one degree weak. For better gapping at the bottom of the bag

Sorry I hit the MP20-HMB's. Yeah the fitter was like, your swing speed is pretty darn high man... Also he commented my temp sucks ;) But he was pretty confident that it was the right choice and the numbers on Trackman didnt lie with the dispersions, spin rates and Apex height. One day... I'd love to get some consistency hitting the middle so I can join the crowd with the sexy blades... at least in my Gap through 7i :)

HMP and Apex were two of the irons I tried last spring. I liked both and had pretty similar results with each. I ended up going with the HMP's based more on a hunch than any empirical evidence. My first shaft selection, the Project X LZ, was a disaster for me, however. I ended up having to send them back to Mizuno to have them re-shafted with Modus 105's. I'm good with them now, though I'm not sure I would use the word "love" to describe my feelings for them...still that probably has a lot more to do with operator error than the quality of the product.

I'm going from Apex 16 to Apex 19 combo set right now.

The HM Pro are nothing like the other irons you've listed, though.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just bought the HMP and love them. Went from a set of MP-52's to the HMP because the 52's were 10 years old and it was time for an upgrade. Great distance, forgiving, and wonderful feel. Demoed the MP-20 MMC and MP-20 HMB as well and the HMP was the winner. Liked the MMC's, but I couldn't pass up the distance gains and the forgiveness of the HMP.

Played 900 Forged for 14 months and have the HMP right now.

same shafts (c taper lite stiff) and I love the extra forgiveness. Feel is 99% close versus my 900 Forged from last year.

i love them, great feel and distance control. I think they spin a little more then the Apex which is a good thing for holding greens and hitting irons a few yards higher.
