Junior One Length

Recommended Posts

Anyone tried them? Not talking about the really good players, just your average 10-12yo playing with them. They have some really good deals going now and I am about to build the next set. Currently have some forged irons ready with graphite shafts, but considering giving the one length a try as they are a good deal. But haven’t heard any feedback on juniors. I know the 4/5 iron is tough to get distance out of, but he mainly jumps to hybrids and woods after 6i anyway.

With Bryson winning in Detroit this weekend, perhaps it is time to revisit this thread about the Cobra One-Length Junior irons?

These are a touch too long for my juniors, but the concept is interesting.

I've read arguments that one-length irons put the development of juniors who use them at risk. Is there a consensus on this theory?

This doesn't necessarily have to be germain only to the Cobra line, as Flynn's customization could also allow one to go one length.

As a sub-topic: if you go one-length on the irons, do you have to go same-length on the wedges?

I was actually talking with someone about some this topic. I dont think for juniors its a good idea, but I see when you have an understanding of swing mechanism and etc. I can see it being a thing.

Whatever your 7 iron lenght would be good until say your hybrid or 3 wood. 8 - LW would be cut to the regular length. A 56-60 shouldnt be the same as 7 iron. Bryson (even though I dont like him) is a tour pro and struggles with it.

I've read before that it isn't a good idea for juniors, and it makes sense. The F7 One Length Junior irons are like 36", so right at 63"/5'3".... so somewhere roughly in the 11-14 range. I do wonder if a semi-competitive or competitive junior that age isn't swinging too hard for those shafts anyways. Seems like a proper one-length setup for a junior would need to be custom made at the end of the day, anyways.

Wedges does seem to be the weak link in Bryson's setup, so yeah, it seems one-length doesn't seem work as well when it comes to close-in.

There are 825 registered players on the PGA Tour and 824 of them got there and continue using regular length irons. Why is anyone even considering this for junior golfers? Even the President of Team Headcase, Sergio Garcia uses regular length irons.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

This is a perfectly reasonable thing to ask, I think.

There is a spirit of exploration and innovation in sports that, no matter how strong a prevailing trend is there will always be players who add their own wrinkle. There was once a day when Tom Kite added a third wedge to his bag and raised some serious eyebrows, a day when Steph Curry started pulling up for 28' jumpers to insure himself uncontested jumpers, a day when Lester Hayes gobbed stickum on his hands in an effort to intercept more passes, and a day when people thought Casey Mize would never be able to have success throwing the split-change that a few Asian professional baseball players perfected.

I won't sit here and die on the one-length hill, because I really have no idea if juniors at any age should be trying it. But I'm definitely willing to listen to opinions why they should or should not.

I was hoping this would be better than discussing what was going on in the COVID cups thread, as that thread keeps coming back and is pretty awful.

I definitely feel you and it's reasonable to want to explore a new option. To me, the more reasonable approach to follow of his are his body mechanics, workouts (GAINZ!) and possibly putting style.

Anyone on here have a junior going with the Arm Lock putter?

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Those mechanics sure are something to behold and possibly emulate.

The gainz he's made through workout and nutrition are impressive for sure, but I do think it is funny how much they have hyped BDC's size. One would think Lou Ferigno was out there golfing rather than someone roughly the size of a D2 fullback. I'm likely jaded from seeing these types of body transformations by prep/college football players, as that type of process is all but mandatory for so many players making that jump.

My kids do start their day drinking a Boost, and have since they were 2 or 3...

I think Bryson will have some success with bulking up, but its not all linear. He will lose something as well. Example right he is sliding the left foot to decrease the impact on the knee. The knee is taking some of the load. He is a young guy. He will need to change back eventually to save the knee / body.

Isnt Sergio President of the Green complex killzers as well?
