Making my own putter

So what do you guys think- if I wanted a softer more muted feel, what should i go for? Thinner? I'm definitely going ot head down to the store (got some irons to fit!) and I'm gonna check out some putters there for comparison, but I just wanted some ideas/theories.

Thanks for the info about milling specialblend. My friend has some more experience (mech e major) so I was mostly relying on his experience. I've only done a little bit myself. If what you say about teh schematics is true, I could just send them teh solidworks file to use for any figures they need, right?

 

 

From my very little putter building experience it seems the heavier thicker putters seem to feel more solid. But it really has to do with the shape and weight which affect vibration.

 

As for the Solidworks file I would give them the file on CD and print the plans (3 view and isometric). Although as Serg mentioned that looks awfully tough to machine. As the machining gets complicated it gets really pricey due a more expesive machine (like and EDM machine to cut the pocket) needing to be used and/or custom fixtures to be made to hold the part such as Serg mentioned on the back. Just by eyeballing there will need to be something resting under the ring so they would need to mill a mount to create the part. Something as complicated as this design might be a much better route to see how much it would cost to get sand casted, since they can usually do a good price from 3D Cad file to an actually piece.

 

 

I don't know about EDMing that. It's what, 4"-4.5"? That would take FOREVER and cook several electrodes.

 

You may be able to broach it, but would almost certainly need to special order a broach. And it may look a little messy around the bottom of the broach.

 

The more I look at this, the more problems I see.

 

yoonie, you may want to simplify the design a little. It could be done, but it would be retarded expensive.

Definitely a lot of changes still to be made. The cavity is actually supposed to have walls to supposed to neck that holds the ring (the side view shouldn't be milled al lteh way through), although I don't know if that would be enough to hold the ring still during milling. The channels themselves were added yesterday, and it was mainly to see what kind of weight I could get. Are they unmachineable even w/ rounded corners? Definitely not attached to them.

 

Thanks again for all the help and feedback. I'll have a more final sketch this weekend probably.

At the shop I used to work for we had an EDM machine and would stack two pieces of steel that were 3 inches thick each. Never had a problem cutting them, but it would take about 40 minutes to cut. Which time translates to money and the more time well the more money it costs. Which is why I would stick to a redesign or make it in two pieces and think about welding or screwing them together. It looks like if the back trailing piece was removed it wouldn't be so tough to machine. Keep it up Yoonie! These are just some hick ups in the process.

yoonie, you may consider using aluminum instead of steel so you don't have to resort to making intricates to get the weight down. Another possibility is to construct the face and flange out of steel and have the tail constructed out of aluminum. You can have tail section anodized a different color to serve as an alignment aid like Never Compromise putters.
