The Cavity set he also played ... Not exactly sure of the year. Obviously not for a long time. I do remember him playing the TRD very very briefly when he came back to Cobra
Norman flirted with cavities for quite a while from 94 or so through 98. And in a variety of styles. There are the cb92 type you've shown, which I consider the model for the (vastly inferior) retail cavities (the Cobra ones, not the King Cobra Norman Grinds). There's also the set shown in post 33 here, which is pretty unique. I also saw a set of totally prototype (unlike anything else I'd seen) with the old black dynamic golds and Wullkotte made Nicklaus style black and gold leather grips. He also played a set of the King Cobra Norman Grind cast cavities (or at least something that looks identical from a few feet with the same dull finish), which surprised me a bit. Anyway, he got around...

The cb92 style irons that Jack used were actually made from pro 82 flatback blank milled out on a bridgeport. At some point I'm sure they got forging dyes made for the retail sets. Jack used them before the cb92s came about, and I'm sure his prototype set was used as the model for the retail cb92. But I'm very curious if that head or the pro 82 was used for some of the versions made for tour players. In addition to Jack and Norman, I've seen some made for Andy Bean and Greg Kraft. I have a couple of sets made for Greg Kraft, but without a set of retail cb92s for comparison, I can't tell. Any sets before the cb92 would have to be, but it's hard to date these things...

I'd love to see some pics of the other norman sets!

That's very interesting. I have a set of his VIPs as well. They're a really interesting design, kind of a partial diamondback. Very anti-left!

Andy Bean had long been associated with Wilson, and these VIPs are specifically ground to mirror those Wilson Staff Dynapower irons from the mid-60s. Mickey Wrights Wilson Staff set is on display at the USGA Golf House in New Jersey.

Like the Cobra cavity irons. You can see the circular milling points in the lower right corner of the cavity
More than likely an early version of CNC milling.

The Spalding "GN" and "Shark" models were specific custom grinds, and are some of Spaldings best work, which you could get, but... RH Only.

Thanks. The Cobras were a set of Greg's. Black steel shafts... Leather grips. The 1 irons were Greg's as well. I'd kill myself hitting any of them lol.

1 iron for Tom Weiskopf here.

Hi Hotspurs,

I love that set. Can you post a face pic of the 7 and 8 irons? I've always been curious if in '08 he was using the same grind that he used a few years earlier.

Thanks,
Andy

Thanks Hotspurs!

That's what I thought they'd look like. For a good number of years, he played with a totally straight leading edge and flat sole with very little if any bounce (basically the Nicklaus grind) in the 2-7 and then a much different grind in 8-P with a little bit of a rounded sole and some camber and rocker. I haven't seen many sets with that drastic of a change in the set, but it's an interesting one because the 8 iron is where the top line starts to curve on almost all irons, so there's some real sense to having the long irons a little more angular and the short irons more rounded. But the change in bounce, leading edge, and sole shape does take some getting used to. These early sets that we're seeing don't have this. I think he started using it in the mid 90s or so, and it's still there in '08.

Your spot on. The 3-7 iron has a dead straight leading edge with no chamber or rocker on the sole. The sole width is also narrow and parallel from toe to heel. The 8-PW on the other hand are more rounded with chamber and rocker with the sole widening from heel to toe. I have a number of sets he used from the mid 1990's and from address they all look the same. Like you I would like to see some more of the Spalding (1980's), Macgregor (1989), and early 1990's Cobra that he played also.
