WRX SoCal - chime in

Recommended Posts

I am hoping I can get out on Sunday for at least 9 and the cold weather and previous day's rain will keep the masses at home. Public golf in OC on the weekend is miserable.

I remember when I first started playing golf and was shooting high 90s or low 100s and was able to finish a round in under four hours (conditions permitting). I really just don't understand why there are situations where I have to block off a six hour chunk of my day and hope that I can finish before the sun goes down eventhough I teed off at 10:42

If anyone here thinks Dos Lagos is better than Champions Club, I would never agree with you.
Lol!!! I love this comment!

Honestly though, courses with severe elevation change are a love hate type course. Dos Lagos is a more traditional type layout, both are fun courses, not sure which I prefer if in comparable condition. I have never made it past hole 12 on champions though always ended up looping back to the front 9 because it was busy, and I heard the back 9 is where it gets really tricked out

Played Western Hills this morning. Did not have my good game today but really enjoy this course and layout. Very old traditional course with small fast greens.

You must drive the ball well and scramble decently to get a good score. For $50 with range balls it's a good deal when you can play on a Monday

In case any of you were planning a meet at Navy its in great shape right now. I played an afternoon round a few days ago and it was probably the best Ive ever seen it.
Thanks for the heads up. I will certainly check it out tomorrow.

It was 41 degrees this morning. I don't know if I legitimately have adequate clothing to play at that type of temperature. I don't mind playing in the cold; I just mind being cold while playing in the cold.
I had played babe at industry early last Saturday and I was on the verge of not wanting to play anymore because I did not have any clothing that could keep me warm enough.

I have a pullover sweater that should do it for me. Normally I would just wear shorts with it, but for some reason this year's cold is different and actually seems to hurt at times. Been in the snow in Alabama (not joking), been in whiteouts in Mammoth in sweats (that was stupid), and I was in North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy ... and this winter's cold air has been the worst of them and I cannot figure out why.

Last night was 38 here, projected the same tonight. I was planning on booking a time at CrossCreek tomorrow ($24 daily deal) but they have a frost advisory in the morning (projected 31 degree low tonight) so I'm guessing that will cause problems all day.
I agree in that this year's cold is on a different level. This time in the past I usually can get away with just cotton chinos, layering up with thermals, and wind breaker if need be but for some reason this year I've been having to do all 3 and still be cold.
I'm wearing my rink jacket during the day to go out on errands as it's been really cold around here. I can go ice skating for 2 hours in a t-shirt and shorts ... but this is an odd December.

Anyone out near Chino Hills or Corona: Was that a fire I saw earlier today, and if so any news on where it was? It looked like it might be on the other side closer to Corona than to the coast and looked pretty fresh. Hope everyone is ok if it is a fire out that way.

I'm going to try and make it to a practice area either tomorrow or just try to play on Friday. Strange weather big time: 71 on Friday, rain and 63 Saturday, and then holding under 65 until Christmas Eve when it is supposed to rain again. Not sure this is California anymore.
Haha, this is quite the CA weather we're having at the moment. I had family come over from Texas and they were not prepared for how cold it was (colder than Texas during this time).

Doing a quick round (hopefully) at David L Baker tomorrow morning and walking onto Brea Creek by myself on Friday just to get out of the house for a while. Ive never walked on alone so I might end up just hitting the range. Saturday morning I think we're either playing Royal Vista or Riverview. The one I'm looking forward to though is next Wednesday. Playing Navy again but with my buddy and his company on their annual golf outing. These guys are supposed to be pretty good so it should be fun trying to keep up

This weather needs to figure itself out. I need to get on the course at least once more before Jan 1 and I'm running out of time. Next chance would either be Monday or Tuesday. Christmas stuff, daughter's birthday, and then a family trip to Carlsbad Sunday... needless to say, I am going into any golf extremely "cold" so I'd hope to just hit the ball square let alone score well.

Costa Mesa CC seemed pretty empty today and in decent shape. Hit some balls in a shirt and vest and while putting was a little chilly. Actually hitting balls was perfect weather.
Used to live right up against the courses there on "Goat Hill" aka Costa Mesa, but never played it. I went over to check it out once but got the feeling there was never a good time to get out. Place was full on a weekday around 11am. Maybe its better these days?

Checked google weather for Fontana this morning and it showed no wind. Drove 30 miles to Sierra Lakes and it was full blown Santa Ana condition. Turned around and went to dumpy El Prado and shot a 39-42 on Butterfield.

Not the day I was hoping for but still pleased with the score. BTW got paired up with another 4some and the 5 of us finished in 4.5 hours. Not bad.

Tried playing yesterday, sooooooooo windy
It's crazy how windy it was! I played dove canyon (just joined) and it was tough but fun
Considering I am below DC by a bit and it is 39 here, I bet tomorrow morning there is a MAJOR frost delay! I was thinking about getting out of the house and playing somewhere, but I get the feeling the frost delays will back everything up quite a bit. If I do, it will be a last minute thing.

I don't feel sorry for you for having to play at DC, I do feel sorry for you for having to play in such wind. I hit a snap hook on Saturday at the range which was able to fly straight because of the left to right wind at 40mph.

I'll be playing Oak Creek in Irvine on Thursday. It'll be my first time there and hopefully there's no frost delay. The pro shop said it was about 1.5 hour delay this morning but it appears to be "slightly" warmer later this week.

Hope you get to have a great time out there! Fun course (only played once and shot 77 from tips) with some interesting holes here and there. If there are any frost issues it would be more tee boxes in the shade than greens. That said, temps in Irvine should be 39 Wednesday night and not the 35-37 it has been. Currently, it is 41 here near Lake Forest/El Toro/Laguna Woods with wind chill showing 36... I'd figure an hour delay max on Thursday.

Hope you like the course. I have played it twice and it didn't really make me want to come back anytime soon. However the first was a SCGA 1 day event (rough was insane.... seriously lost balls in the rough and could not find them) that took 6 hours and the other was a 4 man scramble so maybe that was part of me not being overly excited with the course.

Thanks! I'm sure it'll take a few holes for me to thaw from the cold! I took a peek at the course tour online and there are definitely interesting layouts.

I will report back on the course condition and layout.

6 hours! Yikes! I'm teeing off early (7ish) so I'm hoping that it'll be reasonable paced that early.

Have fun, oak creek is a fun and interesting layout. It's very flat compared to every other non muni course in the area, so I think it's surprising to a lot of players

I heard Strawberry Farm conditions are not the best right now. I'm not paying full price to play at Oak Creek right now so that's one of the reasons why I'm trying it out to see how the course is. It's the last round of the year so I'll try to enjoy it!

Both Strawberry and Oak Creek are overpriced. I prefer Oak Creek though between the two.
