Golf in Germany/Italy

Not a course specific question, but I am in the military and have the possibility of requesting station in Germany or Italy. Golf is an obsession, and while I could live without it, it would definitely help my decision making if I knew what the general state of golf was like in these two countries...

 

I did a google search for golf in Germany/Italy, and I was able to find information mainly on resorts. I'm okay with not playing everyday, but is it financially feasible to play once a week without breaking the bank (I suppose this is more a question of what the average round costs)? Are most clubs open to the public?

 

As far as practice, are there enough golf ranges where it wouldn't be a 1 hr commute just to hit some balls?

Lots of good courses in Germany and Italy. 700+ in Germany, but mostly you will need a Handicap Certificate to play. Not much pay and play courses.
Same with ranges, Rangefee usually around 10€ plus balls.

Lot of good courses in Italy, in which part would you like to travel?

I am station in Italy. Not many golf courses at all. Where u getting station?

I'm stationed in Italy. (Air Force) The course on my base is pretty decent and there are a few courses in the local area that are very nice. I PCS'd here from Germany where it seemed to be raining all the time and dystroyed the golf courses up there. Weather in Italy is a lot nicer which means more opportunities to go golfing.

Larzpdot, i am assuming you are stationed at Aviano, have you been down to Camp Darby to play? Have your heard anything about the golf down there? I know there isn't a course on base, but there are a few around the base.

I haven't been down to Camp Darby yet. I just picked up golf this year so I have spent most of my time on the base course. I live next to the golf course in town called Aviano-Castello and there's another course about 45 minutes up in the mountains called Cansiglio. That was an awesome course! Both of them offered a little discount for me because I'm a member on base.
