Cool Clubs / Club Champion - which

Recommended Posts

If you were to get a high end fitting, based on your experiences, would you go with Cool Clubs or Club Champion (both are in the Dallas area now)? A third alternative is a club fitter who was the Ping Regional club fitter of the year in 2009. Also, would your recommendation change if I said it was an iron fitting, or if I said I am not interested in any exotic shafts but just want to find the set of irons that gives me the best performance (distance and dispersion) and are properly fit in regard to shaft material (steel vs graphite), shaft length, lie angle, grip size, and proper distance gapping?

I would just go to a local respected repair shop. No need to spend hundreds of dollars for that type of information and fitting. I think it would be overkill for your needs.

Definitely disagree with. There's no such thing as too much information or overkill for a fitting. Fittings are all about optimizing your game to a "T". If you even think for a second that your local guy gave you a suspect fitting, the confidence you have in your clubs will suffer.

If I were you, I'd definitely do the Cool Clubs or Club Champion. I've heard people say they prefer Cool Clubs over Club Champion. There are several other threads on this topic as well, you should check them out.

We have both in Chicago as well and I've been looking into each to see which I should do and why. Personally, I would choose Cool Clubs because they offer a full bag fitting but it's done outside. This is the deal maker for me personally, as I want to see how the clubs react from grass, not a mat inside.

I know you said you were only looking for irons and probably not anything special when it comes to shafts, so these options might be a bit expensive for what you're looking for. Like throwing a stick of dynamite at a chipmunk...probably a bit over the top. I think what I referenced before is $675 just for the full-bag fitting, not including any clubs. So it'll get steep pretty quick.

If you're looking for irons, the Ping guy sounds good, but I'm sure he deals with Ping only, but if not, that should help. If you go to a normal big box store, you're simply at the mercy of the quality of the employee you'll be working with and more than likely, what kind of mood they're in.

I have 15 years of repair experience. Based on your needs, which are very basic, I could probably fit you myself with just Q and A.

On the other hand, if you want invest $250 on a shaft, yes those shops are the best place to do it.

I think that shafts are hands down the most important component of a golf club but you will not be able to utilize the benefits of high end shaft fitting unless you are a consistent ball striker.

I've been to Cool Clubs in lewisville and the 2009 regional ping fitter you speak of. Both are done outside, both use launch monitors (cool clubs trackman, ping guy flight scope).

Both were great however I feel that I got a 'better' fitting at cool clubs. Ping guy's prices were over what you would pay at any retailer which seemed strange. Cool clubs was msrp on the driver and shaft.

I've been as low as a 2 handicap but it has gone up in the last year (still single digit) due to some knee problems. The knee has now been repaired (replaced actually) and I am looking to reward myself for what I went through with a new set of irons. I am perfectly happy with everything else in my bag. :)

DoctorPhil.. I know the role shafts play in drivers woods and hybrids, but would you still consider the shaft the most important component of the iron clubs as well?

And other Phil - If this truly is a reward for yourself, then go to Cool Clubs and get a nice fitting and nice set. I've heard nothing but good things about that place.

In that case, I think Cool Clubs would be my choice. I have a friend who work with them in Phoenix and he would be qualified to fit a Tour professional.

Cool clubs was a great experience. Mine was a driver fitting, but I would imagine the iron fitting would be just as good. It's a little difficult to get to and you have to drive through some construction to get there but they have signs everywhere showing you where to go (its on the backside of the Castle Hills driving range).

I did a fitting with Dustin there and he was great at going through all of the numbers with me, what was working, what wasn't and why. Again, highly recommended.
