Riuzzi- Thanks for the compliments. (cool) Unfourtunately I've only done some carpet putting, being located in Canada. Hopefully some Golfwrx testers will let me know! :idhitit:

WannaBePro- For the production model, probably a good 10-12 hours. Some of that is CNC time though, so I can work on my manual mill or lathe while it is running. The prototype took much, much longer, as I had to do all the CAD, programming, planning, fixture, and just generally figuring things out for the first time.

moecat- Thanks buddy! I should be able to talk a friend into helping me with the site. On a completely unrelated note I have to make a trip to the beer store. :smilie_titty:

coco, jaw2000, dcmidnight, ftjoy285-Thanks!

ebs1- I'm hoping for a summer start-up date. If so I'll be an Approved seller/sponsor and everyone will know.

LOL, my wife saw the thread and said "I dont want to come back from the store and see 'home milling machine' in some sort of goggle search..."

VERY nice post. I am extremely impressed with all the time and detail you used. I love the little machines I need to get one in my garage. While at work I have some BIG Boy milling machines and they really are fun. But I think your set up looks great.

Did you have pressure on that tail when you were parting off? That probably pushed the part of into the tool jamming it.

If you ever need a CNC job learning and using CNC Machines everyday give me a call.

Once again Serge, great thread. I love the evolution of this putter from the original designs and the growth you've shown from your first putters (which are still good IMO) to this. I'm amazed at the work you've put into this, how involved the process is to churn this out, and with how it turned out. :smilie_titty: Hat's off Serge! Again, great thread. (cool)

Very nice putter. Clean lines and obvously a lot of thought went into it.

I've told you this before, but what the heck, if you ever want a tester

for a "Long" model, I'm here!

Don't worry, you're a tester. I bought the long shaft weeks ago. (cool) Just keeping you in suspense. Send me a PM with your e-mail and we'll sort out the details. I can make it heavier than 340-370 if you want, just a couple minor programming alterations.

Aw heck, I put your name and WRX name up there anyway - putter fanatics everywhere should know!

What are some good Canadian beers to check out these days? (cool)

He, he, thanks moecat. :smilie_titty:

As for Canadian beers, the best ones are usually from the really small local breweries, much like it is in the UK. I can't remember any of these off the top of my head. Some of the bigger (ie widely distributed) ones that are good are Sleeman's, Rickard's and Alexander Keith's. I usually drink Becks though. :)

Great work and great thread, Serge. One of the best ever!

How deep is it from the front of the face to the back flange along the centerline?

Thanks Drew, I've been putting the thread together for a while. Nice to hear the diehard putter crowd appreciates it.

It's 3.5" face to back. It's .66" face to the start of the cutout.

Check out an example of how much a CNC milling machine costs.

http://www.taigtools.com/cmill.html

I would stay away from that one. Minimum RPM, 1,100? There are times when you want to turn slower than that. Also, accesories are limited (No carbide insert cutter, biggest collet is 1/4", etc...) . On a positive note, it does claim to be able to cut steel.

I have this one here; CNC

(one on the left, P/N 8540).

Comes with everything, including a computer with installed software. I just assembled the mill, plugged in the cables coming out of the PC into the X, Y, and Z axis stepper motors, and booted the computer. The code was the same as I was used to. The control is also super simple and well laid out. There are also a million accessories for Sherline machines. The only negative is that it is very light duty. Brass and aluminum only. It can cut steel, but not very fast or very well and it just puts too much stress on the machine.

Oh, yeah for all you guys looking to get into this; Please, start with a manual machine before getting a CNC. Learning machining and computer control at the same time is just waaaaaaaay to much for just about anybody. Take some machining courses at a community college to help with the basics before you buy a machine and go from there.

I wish I had a milling machine...

LOL, my wife saw the thread and said "I dont want to come back from the store and see 'home milling machine' in some sort of goggle search..."

It truly is one of the coolest toys ever. Come up with an idea and execute it from start to finish.

PS, your wife catches on quick. Do you ever sneak anything by her?

example of a fancier CNC milling machine

That is weird! I've never heard of a dual head mill before. They do get fancier though, this is a retrofit of a manual mill, not a purpose built CNC. There is no automatic toolchanger, and the programming language sounds simplified.

I really want something like this;Haas

Maybe in 7-8 years...

After I had changed my boxers

:( Well done Serge. Really a great thread and the results look great as well. :idhitit:

Thank you Reid. I'm glad yourself along with the rest of the WRX community likes the thread. And, yes, that did scare the heck out of me. The blood went cold for a couple of seconds!

Awesome post Serge!!!

And an awesome looking putter!!!

Thanks for detailing the whole process with us.

I echo what reebus says - that would make a fantastic mid/long putter - what are the chances?

You're very welcome. :) Reebus will be testing a long version of this. Stay tuned...

what a great thread and work SD! thanks for all the detail into the process of making your product.

Hey, no problem! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Serge, I am very, very impressed. Your previous putters, as amazing as they are, seem like nothing when compared to this. Incredible result you have. All the time and effort you put in really, really paid off as shown. GREAT JOB!!!

Thanks, I'm glad you like the results! :smilie_titty:

The amount of prep work was certainly more than in my other putters. But I did go through a lot of the same planning with the other models.

My favorite parts...

A: That you actually DID what a lot of people talk about. Bravo!

B: That it's a lefty. That is usually the first thing people b*** about!

C: Re-Read A.

My hat is off to you sir.

Thanks. It's been in the works for a while and it turned out great so I thought it would be nice to share with you guys. And honestly, how often do you see a thread like this anywhere?

WoW! (cool) Great job! I liked this putter ever since it became your avatar. Just a beauty.

Thank you Boba! I like the raw aluminum as well.

very nice, reminds me a little of my putter

except your's points in the wrong direction!!!!!

From the top they do look somewhat similar. However, my putter is a little more square, as the two radii don't meet at the back, where as with the NC they do. The soles are completely different. I've had this idea in my head for a while.

Yes, I did have some pressure on the tail when parting. But the stock was fluch against the face of the chuck, so there shouldn't have been any movement in the Z. It was almost certainly due to the coolant not being in constant flow and a pause with feeding to "take a peek". Big mistake.

I saw that several times in college. Guys turning and feeding too slow when parting and it just grabs. Someone even broke a quick change toolholder in half! He was parting a big cylinder of tool steel, it grabbed, and the stock lifted right over the tool and snapped the holder! Looking back, I'm amazed no -one got hurt in those two years.

Thank you for the compliments and the offer. (cool) But I kind of want to do my own thing. I like being in control of everything from design to finished product.

Thanks B! Glad I could contribute to the WRX community and show people something they don't often see. I'm glad you like the way my designs are going, your opinion is very much respected buddy! :smilie_titty:

Well, I came in to work this morning, and as usual, checked out the WRX before actually

getting started. Was reading through this post to see if there were any new pictures and

what people were saying. I almost skipped over Serge's response to my whining about wanting

to be a tester for a Long Version. I read it once, blew coffee all over my keyboard, and then

re-read it again. I AM SO PUMPED!

Thanks for the opportunity Serge! It really does look like a good design for a Long, or

Mid putter. (cool)
