east coast guys and amateur golf

So i'm not that great a golfer, i mean technically speaking i guess i am good, but as an amateur competitive golfer i'm just a regular schmuck. I've found playing golf on the east coast, especially with a 9-5 job, just makes the early season qualifying process so difficult.

 

I mean, my course has been open 4 weeks, and we already have our provincial mid-am in a week, and interclub qualifying this weekend

 

I don't like making excuses, at the end of the day you have to go out and play. But having a 9-5 job with no flex time also sucks, when you are competing against school teachers, retired guys, or guys who own their own businesses LOL. I've played like 10 full rounds at my course YTD. And i'm probably in the 10-15 range in terms of players at my club, so i need to play well to make all the teams, and it's just so tough early in the year when you have kinks to work out

 

Anyone else go through this? Or just think that it sucks? Or am i just a whiner?

I think golf on the east coast and north is very difficult if you are serious about the game. I am in the northeast, and I played my first round today. No temp greens, but the greens were in rough shape, and a TON of courses in the area still have 4 or 5 temp greens. I am not serious about the game, but guys who are who have to work full time - yikes. It certainly wouldn't be easy, especially like you said when you're going against guys who can get out there five days + a week and not have to worry about it.

In NJ, there is a series of inter club matches very early on in the season with the low handicap guys from each club and their club pro. While they're played very early on in the season and most everyone (except the Florida season guys) comes in stale (and the course/greens are pretty beat), it is a great way to "knock the dust off" and get in tournament shape. I found it forced me to practice to prepare for them in not-quite-ready-for-golf weather. A few of those matches and the requisite practice got me in mid-season form much earlier than expected.

But, yeah, you're obviously a whiner.
