I wish i could join, but I'm stuck over in New Orleans.

I still haven't played Memorial Park...what does everyone think of the course? I've heard good things about it.

Memorial Park is a great track. It is fairly long from the tips and is normally in very good shape. The rough is normally not so bad. Tree lined in places. Greens roll well and normally quicker, though the last time I played they were rolling slow. Some of the holes are beasts. Overall its a good track to play on. I try and get out there when I can because I know I need to be on my game to shoot a good score out there.

I just moved tyo the area late last year and played Memorial only once and loved it. That is the range I always go to (anyone know of a public grass tee range in the near vicinity?).

I played from the closer tees only because 7300 yards from tips is a bit far for me and unfortunately they do not have a decent in between set but not bad. My ideal is 6700-6900 yards. The course is amazing for a muni.

Good condition, some wide open holes, some tougher. a little course knowledge always helps, as with anywhere for that matter. I was hitting a lay up on a par 4 hole as there was water 215 out. I hit 4 iron off the tee and my ball went in the hazard but luckily stopped 2 feet from the actual water (nice downhill lie, tough stance, rough, over water 80 yard shot - whew, made par with a good shot). Not being familiar with how much it rolls, I over clubbed.

Anyway, getting on as a single in teh morning on a weekend can be tough from what the starter tells me but I lucked out. Showed up at 8 am, got on the list, teed off by 8:45!!

Agree, on the weekend, you're looking at a minimum 30 min wait. On the weekdays after 3, for me, it has been quite easy to get on, either as a single or in a 3some.

The course is in great shape, fairways are tight, greens are running medium-fast, bunkers in excellent condition along with the tee boxes. The rains has helped, with that said, there are a couple of holes on the back 9 which are cart path only as of yesterday, it may have dried out by today(7/13)

Wildcat is probably the closest. Probably next closest would be the one on Old Westhemier Road at Richmond, behind West Houston Medical Center. If you are willing to drive a little further past that, Marti Golf Center is one of the better ranges in town.

is the West Med Ctr one the Royal Oaks Country club? On a map, that was all I could see around there.

I am sorry and I hate to be a pain but I am new here. The only place i saw was the Royal Oaks COuntry Club. Is it that range you mean? Are they public despite the name? Or is it close by there and if so, what is the name of it?

Royal oaks country club is private. There is a range down the street off of richmond ave and between kirkwood and dairy ashford. I dont know the closest cross street but those are the 2 of the well known streets it's between. It is located between the west houston medical center and westheimer rd.

As for Marti's, it is located off of dairy ashford and beechnut.

Got it. Thank you. Googled it and got the name as West Houston Golf Ctr, exactly where you described. Thank you very much!!!!!

Wortham, just south of downtown, is grass. Not a long range, but it's usually in good shape.

God I hate the mats at Memorial and Hermann.

I wish I could get excited about Memorial, but with coupons, there are just as good options in the Houston area (non-muni) where the staff don't treat you like a turd if you aren't a regular. Just my 2 cents.

That has been the biggest complaint I've had about Memo all along. Look, I realize the place is packed 6 days a week and unlike a lot of courses around town, you actually have to "work" as a marshall/counter jockey there, but at least treat me like a paying customer instead of a burden. It never ceases to amaze me the way the staff acts at that place. Problem is they know that if it pisses you off and you don't play there again, its no sweat off their backs because the walk-up list just got one person shorter. :cheesy:
