I want some project x's for mb's that im ordering in the near future. What i wanted to know was if anyone could tell me the major difference of the 6.5 and the 7.0. If i hard step the 6.5 or soft step the 7.0 what is the differences to them. Im not very familiar with stepping so i hope someone can help guide me in the right direction. I have a high ball flight and usually pretty high spin so im looking to lower both

Here are my numbers to help you.

6 Iron

SS 95-97(aggressive transition)

spin: 5900-6100 roughly. can get int the mid 6000's though

I hope you can help me out and if you need any more info just let me know.

I don't think 5900-6100 spin with a 6 iron is high. Sounds about perfect to me.

Soft and hard stepping change the flex by a 1/3 of a flex, approximately, for each step.

Spin and flight characteristics changes are minimal within ones step, in my opinion.

Do a search for soft stepping or hard stepping and you will find a wealth of information.

6kish spin is perfect for a 6 iron.

I wouldn't change a thing if those were your normal numbers.

Tour average is roughly the number on the bottom of the club x1000 for spin averages.

Difference between what you're suggesting is probably not going to be major.

If you need to lower your ball and lower spin in the process...the best way is usually to decrease loft on the club head. Shaft won't make a huge difference in this case, since they're so similar.

Just go with what feels the best. But I wouldn't shy away from those spin numbers. They're ideal.

What do you play now?. 6000 Rpm is not to much spin, its quite low on that club speed
Any LM data?

I am going to my local sports store tomorrow to get on the trackman so i will let you guys know tomorrow. And as the spin goes i would like it to be around 5500 because i hit it so high i want to lower the ball flight just a little. I am new to the whole club making thing in general and the guy at dicks recommend a hard stepped 6.5 so i was just seeing i that was something i really needed. But ill get you guys that LM data tomorrow and thanks to those that responded already, I appreciate it.

for lowering the ball flight are you recommending i go a degree or two strong, or deloft in my swing?

Either. But many elect to change the physical loft of their irons.

But like Howard said...you aren't generating a ton of spin for your speed, so that's confusing. The difference between 5500 and 6000 is going to be pretty small with a 6i in terms of flight.

Putting in 135mph ball speed (a rough number guess, I have no idea what you're generating) and 6000 spin vs 5500 at 15 degrees of launch (again, no idea what you generate...) yields a total distance change of 4 yards and a height change of 2 feet.

If we lower your launch to 13 and keep the other numbers the same you gain about 2 yards in carry. So once you get what your numbers are...it'll be easier to figure out what to do.

If your spin is low...which it seems like it may be, you could have a contact issue or maybe dynamic loft issue that is impact that.

Make sure you note which system you are hitting on tomorrow. We need to know how accurately it calculates and measures data. Or, is it really a Trackman, the orange box and all?

I would be buying the shaft that feels better to you as the changes in ball flight between 6.5 vs 7.0 will be almost unnoticeable out on the golf course.

As for hard vs soft step the difference will end up being a 1/3 flex, I am not sure that even the best in the world would notice much difference between 1/3 flex in the same series of shafts.
