3 Club Challenge - Help Needed

Hey everyone, I'm trying to put together a 3 club challenge/fundraiser and can't seem to find any guidance other than "what clubs would you use?" Almost all of the tournaments that I participate in are plain old 4 man scrambles and I was thinking about going a different direction.

 

Here's what I have for (basic) rules so far:

Clubs:

• Choose three clubs from your bag to use for the round (i.e.: Driver, 7 Iron, Sand Wedge).
  
• Players will have the opportunity to “BUY a putter” at time of registration, giving them a fourth club for $10 per person.
  
• Players may not swap clubs with teammates at any time during the round.
  

Format/Scoring (edited):

• Stroke play (individual). 4 man scramble (as recommended by fishstix & pigems) to make it a bit more strategic.
  
• Each team member will compete for the lowest score of all participants.
  
• Each team will add their individual scores together to compete vs. other teams for the lowest score.
  

Remember, this is going to be a fundraiser for my organization to help pay for community events and the end of year holiday party. I figure we can give prizes out to the individuals & teams coming in 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place and then have prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin.

 

So, I'm asking you guys & gals if you think this format would be fun for the participants or is there another format that might provide better entertainment.

Additionally, if you have more ideas for good ways to raise funds like having a raffle or chipping challenges, let me know.

My advice.....don't do this. This doesn't seem fun at all. I wouldn't even play in it. Just do a normal scramble where everyone can use all their clubs.

Personally I wouldn't do that if I was you. Since it is a fundraiser it would be a lot easier to get people to come if it was a scramble format, not stroke play.

We play this in our mens league and its a blast. We get 3 clubs including the putter (some people putt with their driver) and play stroke play. We have a few haters but you cant please everyone all the time. TRY IT!

I agree that this will be tough in a charity outing. If you have a hard core group of golfers it might work.

What if you made it a four man scramble where each person gets 3 clubs and a putter. Then make it so team mates couldn't share clubs between each other, so the team would have to strategically pick which players on the team would carry which clubs. Could make it a little more fun

Alright, so now I'm on board with the scramble idea. I'm still going to have it a 3 club with the option to buy your own putter.

Shouldn't have a tough time gathering teams. Us military guys love our golf.

seems like a great outing. The purchase of the putter makes it more profitable of the charity as well

I think it sounds like a good time. I'd sign up. Charity scrambles have nothing to do with real golf anyway. Might as make the tournament stand out from all the others.

I would play in an event like this. It really sounds like fun. Especially in the scramble format. It might be the first time ever that the "winning" team of a scramble is over par......
I think that all clubs on the team should be the same loft or number club for everyone. Talk it over, pick a strategy, pick 3 clubs, buy a putter and go.......

So you have proven my point.

I help run a charity golf outing and this idea wouldn't work for us because we don't have a group of hard core golfers who "love their golf". We do have a group of people that want to support our charity and have a fun time hacking it around our local course as part of their twice yearly "golfing experience".

Asking that group of people to sit down and design a 3 club strategy to go play a scramble will end up with a smaller turn out the next year, lower dollars earned for our charity and the possibility that our scramble will eventually die.

If it works for your group, more power to you.
