here's the howard jones post about dialing it in.

Found that to be really interesting. Just pulled the head off and compared things. Red is the center, green is where I'm hitting it. Measured it and it's 1/2 inch difference. I'm not quite following his graphic on club length and tee height though. Did you you do this before with your club? Seems like I'd cut it down 1/2-3/4 inch to move it toward the toe, then have to mess with tee height to move it back up the face?

Golf Talk Friday : What is your favorite golf book?

Right now it is "The Big Miss." I like hearing the Tiger Woods story from the perspective of someone who knew him at different stages of his career and worked with him closely. I'm not finished yet and it is only my second golf book. But, so far so good.

My first was Zen Golf and definitely helped me with the non technical aspects of golf (I still have plenty to work on).

I do have two other books in my Amazon wishlist: The Practice Manual and Every Shot Counts.

Golf Talk Friday : What is your favorite golf book?

"Who's your Caddy" by Rick Reilly. From caddying for Jack Nicklaus on a course he designed and built "Why am I here?" he asks. Its worth if for the chapter where he caddies for John Daly alone, talking about how the guy illegally selling chocolate cookies on the 10th hole of St. Andrews propelled him to victory, calling them, if I recall correctly, "better than the Otis Spunkmeyer ones at the local gas station back home."

Harvey Penick "Little Red Book" and Arnold Palmer "Golf My Way" Both reinforce the basics. And, they are the only golf books I own.

Wasn't it Jack Nicklaus' Golf My Way?

Haven't read a ton of golf books. Favorite is probably Golf is Not a Game of Perfect.

I bought The Practice Manual at City's recommendation and hated it outside of the first chapter. But I can see why it works for the way he plays and thinks about his swing.

I don't have any plans to buy another instruction book ever again. But would like to read more on the rest of the game. One of these days I'll read The Big Miss, and would like to read more on course design. I know City and FAbb have noted a few books on that over time.

Sully since your being a jerk.

I set my club naturally where it lays. Meaning I don't reach forward towards the ball. So, maybe a club heading space behind the ball then swing.

It allows me to get the head square at impact. I used to hold off the driver swing too much and causes some wicked slices, etc.

Here's a golf book I DON"T recommend:

This book may be responsible for many of the problems I've had over the years, mainly in response to its emphasis on the back swing wrist c0ck and lag. Its seems right, and has a lot of good ideas in it, but what worked for Bobby Clampett wasn't working for me. Its really like The Golfing Machine- Lite version IMHO, and emphasis on the wrist c0ck I think is overly much. My first lesson with my new instructor he immediately picked up on what I was doing, in that I was so involved in making that wrist c0ck I had gotten so I was swinging with all arms. Now that we have gotten me to a more rotary, turn-based swing, I still c0ck my wrists, but its in REACTION to my turn, not the purpose of it. My new instructor says don't even think about cocking your wrists, it occurs naturally for me, and has the video to prove it. And the emphasis on lag? Again, my instructor says just let it happen, don't force it.

i think - and this is just a guess - all you need to do is increase your tee height. start with 1/2" to 3/4" higher. i'd probably put one of those skymark protectors on the clubhead before trying this tho.

change one variable at a time, so if that move doesn't quite do it, then try gripping up 1/2" and see what happens. cheaper than trimming and regripping the club, that's for sure.

Dead Solid Perfect is a pretty funny golf fiction book.

There's a lot of golf non-fic out there. "The Match" was good. "Duel in the Sun" was pretty good. I've never really read any John Feinstein.

I liked Shane Ryan's "Slaying the Tiger" from recent memory.

This is all the books I've tagged "golf" at goodreads. I've definitely read more, but just don't have them all tagged.

That "know your swing" is actually "going low". I don't know why that cover came up. If I mouse-over, it comes up with the correct link.

I tee my driver up a bit lower than what may be ideal. Also since I have a bigger tendency for the heel slice, I set up with the ball toward the toe end of the driver.

I'm trying to figure out if that was intentional or not.

It wasn't. It's definitely just a mis-directed link. It's "Going Low" a book on the mental game.

The funny thing about How I play Golf by Tiger is that forced smile on the cover.

The book is really aimed at a general audience, with a lot of graphics and cartoons, but I can't really say I learned much, as this was Tiger's book during the Butch Harmon years, so a lot changed when he went to Foley, Haney, etc. The "snap the front leg" for power move is meant for Tiger and .001 percent of the golfing population. The stories in the book were good regarding his junior golf years.

Golf Talk Friday : What is your favorite golf book?

My favorite book is Payne Stewart: The Authorized Biography. I was a huge fan, and the 1999 US Open at Pinehurst is one of my favorite majors. I picked up Shapiro's Golf's Mental Hazards at your recommendation, but didn't finish it. I thought it'd mess me up even more mentally.

Growing up I read Hogan's Five Fundamentals, Nicklaus' Golf My Way, Norman's Shark Attack, Watson's Getting Up and Down, and Penick's Little Red Book. The Norman book was probably my favorite back then.

I've never finished an instructional book, though I've started probably a dozen.

Off the top of my head:
