MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

Watching the Farmers Open Saturday Am and they had Justin Rose and Brandt Snedeker warming up with wedges on the driving range on Golf Channel. I noticed something in their setups that I don't do, and have been taught the opposite.

Justin Rose has his left wrist cupped at address.

I couldn't find one for Snedeker, but his was actually more pronounced.

I have been taught by my current instructor that the ENTIRE left arm should be straight at address and through impact. I setup in a y pattern, but the left arm mirrors the y without the wrist being bent.

So I go out in the backyard with a 58deg, take a few practice swings with my normal swing, and then setup with my left wrist cupped like Rose and Snedeker.

I LAUNCH one into my neighbor's backyard with nice penetrating flight, straight.

Do it again, and again.

So it works for me. (And the neighbor didn't seem to mind)

I get this is one bucket of balls in my backyard, and it could be a fluke, but do you all setup like this as well? Does it carry through to the other clubs in your bag? Even Snedeker's driver setup, looks to me at least to have a cupped Left wrist.

Its incredible how short Rahms backswing is, it looks shorter than even JB Holmes.

Just came across this, impressive speed and AoA in that swing:

It's funny you mention this. I cup my left wrist for years but in my recent lessons we are trying to get me to go the opposite way.

It feel natural but it has been impacting me compressing the ball and has aided in my early extension.

It's different but my contact has improved dramatically but working on getting everything else to follow suit...

I don't know how you go 8 weeks without golfing. If I go more than a week, I'm ready to open a vein.

I think its more like 11 weeks and counting....

my guess: the cupped lead wrist is mainly a function of how strong your grip is.

Your pool is probably run differently than mine then. 1 pick each week, accumulate winnings thru the Tour Championship, you can only use each golfer once?

i know you were asking DC but mine is:

pick a golfer once and only once

season starts at the TOC and runs through the Tour Championship

you accumulate money based on what your selection earns each week

the money is DOUBLED at the majors, players, and one tournmament of your choosing (that isn't a no cut event like a WGC or a fed ex event)

at the zurich you must have both golfers available, you can't use either again, and you get what they each earn. so if you pick two guys who each make 500K you get a million

so far in order I've used Sneds (meh), JT (WINNER), molinari (no one made money that week), walker (MC. yuck.)

200$ to get in. 445 people. side pools

those rahm numbers are super interesting. his swing speed isn't really remarkable (for the tour). it's more that he's efficient. rahm is t65 in clubhead speed, 26 in launch angle and therefore 13th in carry efficiency. i think a lot of the younger guys learned to hit up on because they grew up playing the modern driver vs. guys in their 40s who were hitting wooden drivers as kids

And ball position, right? Forward ball position = more cup?

ball position, hand position, jock position... these all play key roles.

everyone who struggles with arm run-on should watch this. this is gonna be on repeat in the corner of my desktop for a long time.

this is literally the top of his backswing. he creates incredible amounts of speed in a short time.

With some flexibility in the wrists and the right length arms, you can probably cup regardless of whether the ball position is forward or back.

Fred Couples, great example of cupped left wrist.

instruction-2008-04-insl01_fred_couples_faceon.jpg

Even with a short iron:

[/media]

Great example. I get that on Freddy's strong grip you can see all the knuckles- I don't think I have ever had a grip that strong- but the ball position is back, the wrist is cupped, and his actual setup still to me at least appears to be in the y. My instructor would have me leaning the shaft way forward to keep that L wrist straight with the arm,

The hashtag seeming fitting, so I continued it. Observation of numbers is one thing but the dude is on tour and just won.

Numbers don't mean crap (Adam Scott's perfect swing--won a few but...) if you cant go on the course and produce.

I just find it hard to believe any amateur could scoff or be judgmental of a pro's numbers...just my opinion.

See also Finau, P Rogers, C Hoffman. Very full shoulder turns, very little run off, making them look like 3/4 swings. Not to mention, Finau and Rogers crush it, and Hoffman isn't a slouch either.

I was trying to be complimentary. He and other young guys, like JT, are more efficient than the older guys. You hear them talk about how far he hits it on TV but they don't really get to the heart of why
