1* of Lie Angle..

Does it make that much of a difference?
Not really sure if this is in the right section of the website but..my curiosity is getting the best of me..

When someone is fitted for a set of irons..will 1* make a difference in how they hit the ball? Some believe 1* does nothing and might as well stay standard or go to 2*. If the person being fit were hitting the ball in the general area of needing a 1* flat lie angle, would it would be worth it to change it to 1* flat, or keep it standard or move it 2* flat?

Also..where do you draw the line as far as the players handicap actually needing a lie adjustment? Is the 1 degree mark only reserved for 0-8 handicap players?

If it gives you more confidence, it will make a difference.

About 'what types of players needing lie adjustments' or any kind of adjustment...Hogan constantly tinkered with his woods and irons: lie angle adjustments, shafts, lead tape, everything. There's a story about a clubpro working at the Cypress golf course in Monterey, lucky enough to having gotten one of Hogan's woods, would always invite guests and members to try to hook Hogan's wood. Everyone...sliced it into the right rough. Hogan tinkered with his woods so much that he made them totally hook proof. Period.

1* definitely makes a difference. I know I can tell by the ball flight. Go with whatever your fitter tells you you need, as long as you have been on a lie board.

Lie angle is extremely important as is loft angle. Lie angle has a lot to do with direction and loft has a lot to do with trajectory. When getting those lie angles checked hit each club off a striker board. Most manufacturers increase lie angle from 3-PW by 1/2 degree. But in some cases the longer irons may need to increased in lie angle because of the downward movement of the toe in the long irons; meaning slightly more upright in relation to mid or short irons. It all depends on speed and loading of the shaft. That's why you should hit every iron in the set.

right click the equipment document on my sig.. it explains lie angle..

correctly fitted lie angle even 1 degree will let u make the correct motion.

The less the loft, the less the effect of lie angle on direction and spin.

Lie angle is establised at Impact and the plane of choice at impact. Also depending what your Coach wants u to do. So... you can either fit the lie angle to your swing. Or your coach can fit the lie angle to the motions he wants u to make.

rom a club-fitters perspective, 1* can make a great deal of difference - to some people, and less to others. Personally, I feel that the more consistent your swing is, the more 1* means. Golf is tough enough with perfect fitting clubs. Why make it tougher?

Besides the usual considerations of hand position, height and arm length, etc, there are more considerations. Never settle for just getting fit for a 5 or 6 iron and never get fit using standard fit charts. Fit the entire set of clubs by hitting off a lie board.

I learned this lesson the hard way after getting fit 2* upright based on my static measurements and a few hits with a 5-iron off a lie board. The beautiful Titleist blades that I ordered were workable in the longer irons, but I hooked everything under a 6 iron. To make matters worse, the fitter didn't realize that Titleist irons were 2* more upright than the Hogans he was fitting me with. Basically, I had a set of irons that was 5* too upright in the short irons and could not be bent to fit. AFter wasting half a season changing my swing to match my new custom fit irons, I went back to my old Hogan blades and spent the rest of the summer relearning how to score well. This experieince is actually what got me into clubfitting. Always remember that one company's standard is not the same as a different company.

Many people flatten their swing plane as they progress from long irons to short irons, me especially. Starting with a 5 iron at 60.5 as my standard, I go 1* upright for the 3 and 4, standard for 5-7 and 1* flatter for the 8, 9, PW, GW and SW. Others need exactly the opposite.

I have also noticed that many average golfers need flatter lies than the current Titelist and Taylormade standard offerings, especially if they are over 30, heavy set, or not very flexible. Many older golfers that learned to play with blades also need flatter lie angles.

Considering the easy availability of custom fit clubs, there really is no reason not to take the extra step and get a set made just for you. They usually don't cost any more and they can usually be had with a minimal wait period - less than 3 weeks.
