Low handicapper and net tournament

Recommended Posts

I hate to sound like a gold snob but I am getting to the point that I hate net tourneys at my club because I feel like I have no chance

Today started out Gold cup we call it . 54 guys chipped in $100 a piece . Cash and a spot on the plaques in the bar goes to the winner . Anyways today is qualifier low 16 move on to the Match Play

I shot a smooth even par 70 gross 4 bogeys 4 . Which comes out to a 69 net . Wen I left 67 wAs fighting to get in and looked like it would drop to 66 . I have no chance . Why do I bother ?? Guy in my foursome who is a 16 Shoots 80 net 64 . I can't do that

Anyways any other low handicappers feel this way ?? I am all for a equal playing field but wen guys shoot even par or under par and don't qualify something seems wrong to me

A 16 shooting 80? A tad unusual...

Net events should nots be 100% handicap because there are too many cheaters or fake handicaps out there. Also there are too many chances for the higher handicaps to have that great round ands shoot under their handicap. I recently beat a lady in a club event ands i had to give her 31 strokes. She shot over her handicap by a bunch too ands i was a couple over mine. I won one up , but beat her by close to 40 shots.

As a low handicap , you have to just play better , however there is no way i play in a Net stroke play event. I only do match play to support the club.

The other sides of the debate is that gross events totally wipeout any higher handicaps. In Net events , a low handicap player can still make a run at it.

If you play a net game with higher handicappers, unless there are "flights", forget about it.

I play in a men's group every Saturday morning. The handicaps range from +1 to -25 or so. If it's a straight up net 100% of handicap format, there is zero chance I can win. I played my best round of the year a month or so ago shooting 69 as a 0.4 handicap. I didn't even finish in the top 5. Each time I would have to shoot 62 or 63 in order to win. I'm just not even close to capable of doing that. I may just stop playing on those days when that's the format. I don't enjoy putting up money I have no chance of collecting on.

It's rare that anyone can beat a man who can score 10 under his cap or that anyone can legitimately do so. Surprisingly ( ? ) this happens with amazing frequency in cap tourneys. The solution is to reduce the valuable prize to just the simple trophy and spend the rest of the money on better food and raffle prizes. :)

You're right. You don't stand much of a chance.

The only thing to do is create different flights by handicap range.

Players should only get 70-80% of their handicaps in a net event.

I rarely play in net events for the very same reason, OP. Even the 80% events can be tough to compete, especially with sandbaggers.

Low caps don't stand a chance with higher caps getting 100% of their handicap.

If a tournament doesn't have a gross championship, then there is no way I'm friggin playing. So many damn sandbaggers it's ridiculous.

If the same guys play in the clubs events, and if the club is keeping the right hcps, then I doubt this is a case of sandbagging.

A higher HC can have a great round once and a while.

Just back from a 3 day event where a 18 HC shot: 101, 83, 99 - No once called him a sandbagger for shooting 83!

As stated before, don't play in these events OR go to your club and push for change instead of being a passive complainer.

Another format I dislike that my leagues use all the time is Chicago. (1 pt bogie, 2 par, 4 birdie 8 eagle) Your target is 39 - handicap meaning I need to get 33 to break even. High handicaps sometimes only need to get 5 points which just about anyone can stumble into occasionally.

My frame of mind those days is to enjoy playing and forget about the format. If I have a great round with lots of birdies or an eagle I may win a few bucks. Otherwise I never have a chance. But- after all the griping is over the bottom line is I'm still playing golf.

A group of guys at my club have gotten tired of the sandbaggers at our member-guest and are petitioning to create a "scratch" flight; that is two man team best ball no strokes. I'm a 4 and my partner is a 13-14 and we generally play against teams that are two guys that are 8-12. We are also asking that we play from the blues (about 6900 yards) instead of the whites (about 6500). Even if we get killed, I'd rather play this format than play against two guys who on half of the holes are laying zero after their tee shots, from the whites.

 • 4 weeks later...

Our men's day format is a informal, small buy in, playing one low (net) ball and skins. We've given up on even playing in it. All four of our players are sub five caps and there was just no way to compete. We'd get a group of older guys, all getting a stroke a hole playing the up tees, always somewhere around 17-18 under for the team. We'd be lucky to get into double digits under par.

One guy in our group made a hole in one and didn't win a skin. Got halved by a birdie with a stroke.

We just play our game within our group now.
