Mens Club Question.....Gross or Net? You Tell Me

Recommended Posts

We are having a small issue at a local Mens Club about proper placement of a team or player for payouts and I sure would love your input on how your club handles these issue.

Part 1

Here is an example to go by,

A person or a team wins their division, both Gross and Net.

1) payouts for both gross and net are equal for 1st place

2) it could be in any division

3) payouts are 2 Gross and 5 Net

Where do you place they......Gross Winners or Net Winners and why?

Does one trump the other knowing that the payouts are equal?

Part 2

Same situation but with a small twist

Low Net of the field or for a division wins a award is now part of the equation,

Same situation,

A Person or a Team wins both Gross and Net

Where do you place them? Gross or Net winners and why?

Thanks

If payouts are the same, most default (I know we do) to gross winner due to "prestige" of being a gross vs. net winner.

Ask yourself, if you were both the gross and net winner, which would you rather be known by?

Maybe I don't fully understand, but if he won both gross and net, why cant he be the overall Gross and Net Winner? Why does it need to be just one?

Assuming only one payout is allowed and the prize(s) are equivalent, low gross goes to the winner of low gross and low net.

If the prize(s) are unequal, then I would allow the winner to make the decision. If one does not want to allow the competitor to make the selection, then award the better/larger prize to the dual winner.

As posted, you can/should only get paid out once so there is no doubling up.

E.g. In a club championship, it is possible for the low gross in the championship flight to also win low net, it's not really possible for a higher capper in the 2nd flight to win low gross.
Along those lines, in a fairly tightly capped flight (e.g. all participants have a handicap spread less than 3-4) it is also very likely the "low gross" for that flight will also be the low net.

this is like common core math....

most of the time players/teams cannot win both gross and net. Gross winners normally get first choice then net gets their choice. No math needed. To me, gross always trumps net. And it has been my experience that if the gross winner is the also net winner as well then they are sandbaggers.

Ok, so far I am hearing Gross trumps Net.

Our club feels that it is a Net first Club.....meaning more payouts on the Net side and trophies to Net Players.

Knowing this, if you were the Tournament Director and the event has a Net trophy on the line and a player or a team wins both gross and net which position do you fill out on your Tournament Sheet for this player or team...Net Winner and the Trophy or Gross winner? And yes, the payouts are the same for both.

I have heard a person at our club suggest to give the Trophy to them, and make them the Gross winners. I found this confusing.

I guess if you are a Net First club and the culture of the club is to put higher priority to Net winners vs Gross winners....the choice should be clear.

Give them the net trophy and net payout as that is the more prestigious of the two at your club.

  • 2 weeks later...

I played in a club that paid gross and net in each flight. How many places depended on entries, but typically 2 gross and 4 net.

There was no preference, you got the highest place earned whether it was gross or net. It seemed very fair.

I've played in all net tourneys and always thought the low gross score should be recognized somehow. I've also played in tourneys where a person could win a gross and a net prize and always thought that was just dumb.
