Jack Nicklaus US Am Irons (Merged)

I have a set of straight taper irons. They are stiffer than Lanny's apex 5 and make Tiger's specs seem truly. Pu---y in comparison. They had steps on the inside of the shaft. There is a kick point, but it takes a strong human to flex it. In my opinion, Jack and possibly Weiskopf were the only players with the ability to use that flex

Nicklaus stated in his book Golf My Way he used relatively soft shaft for his swing speed. S flex not X flex.

They book was written a decade or more after he used straight taper.

I remember an article on a test on Nicklaus' bag from the 60s or 70s...it mentioned that few of shafts had the same frequency (that BJones' hickories were closer matched) and that a some of the balls left in the were out of round.

Never heard anything about his shafts being the same length.
not surprising about frequencies. When was the tech invented? As for the MacGregor ball. It is well know they made horrible balls. Rumor had it it that Jack had a special ball made or that he was using a Titleist that was re-logo'd.

No way the clubs were single length. Absurd.

I may be the source of that "Jack playing a Titleist ball branded with MacGregor logo." I've related that story a number of times on a couple different forums, including a couple times here, IIRC.

I spoke with a retired MacGregor rep who swore to me he saw the balls being stamped, in the Titleist plant, with his own eyes. Nothing else he ever told me over the years was junk, I rather doubt he'd make something up on that one point.

Thanks for the story. I remember reading an interview with Tom Wieskopf and he said Jack got a special ball that he and the other Macgregor staffers couldn't get. Not sure if this went on for many years or was just something that occurred for a season or so but you gotta think that Jack would get some special treatment being that he owned part of the company at one point in time.
