Last 2 years they have made huge improvements and put a lot of money into it. If you live in the area you can't lose for $900, one of the few courses around with a grass driving range. Not that the range is anything to brag about but at least it's there. But greens are usually decently fast and it's been getting better every year. Where are you from?

Has anyone in the Boston area played Pembroke Country Club? This is my first golf season living in the Boston area and they have a Young Executive season pass for $900. I'm just trying to gauge what people think of the course and if it would be worth it to commit to the season pass.

You generally get what you pay for in life.

Yeah, a lot of the reviews on Golf Advisor said that its been improving each year since Jeremey Roenick bought it, and having access to the driving range is a huge bonus. I'm originally from central Florida but moved up to Boston at the end of last summer after graduating from school.

And usually don't get more than what you pay for. That being said I wonder what Atlantic charges for a yearly pass much better course.

I'm not a member so i can't speak much for it but I would totally look at Harmon Golf in Rockland. Apparently it is a 9 hole course with a fantastic practice facility (which I have been to). Not sure how much it is for a membership but it can't be that bad.

I wouldn't join Pembroke the course kind of sucks and gets a lot of hackers on the weekends. Also coming from the city it is a pain in the a** to get to once you get off the highway.

Are you living in the city? The south shore is somewhat expensive for golf, and traffic is terrible like someone else said. You may have better luck looking north of the city. But if Pembroke is $900 unrestricted you can't really beat that though. Paid for under 20 rounds..South Shore CC in Hingham had the same deal($850) for people under 30 that I did years ago but I'm not sure if that deal is still around.

I'm living in the South End, and Google Maps says its about a 40 minute drive. I can only play on weekends because of work, so maybe I'm being naive but is traffic really that bad midday on a Saturday or Sunday? I looked into into South Shore CC but it looks they've raised their Young Executive membership to $1550 which is probably out of my price range. If i don't do the Pembroke membership, I think I'll probably just have to mix it up using Golfnow.

Route 93 south can take you 8 minutes one day to get between the south end and Braintree and then the next day it can take you an hour. It really is a crap shoot.

Route 3 south is not much better. More often than not during the summer is it jammed up between the Braintree split and the Hingham Derby St exit.

If you want to maximize your playing time I would personally not join a club and play at some of the courses to the west and north of the city. Some of them good, some of them only ok.

Off the top of my head and in no particular order -

Braintree CC (south of the city but close and actually quite nice)

Sandy Burr CC

Newton Commonwealth

Mt Hood

Meadow at Peabody

Franklin Park

Leo J Martin (have low expectations with this one)

I live in the city as well - you need to drive at least 30-40 minutes for anything decent (George wright being he exception but expect a 6 hour round). I played pembroke 4 or 5 times last year. It's a solid deal for the money and not really that bad of a commute (on a weekend). Itll take you 30-40 minutes. Greens were in great shape. Other than a couple tee boxes in repair, there wasnt anything to complain about. I've found the weekend hacks hit every public course so thats an issue anywhere you go.

The courses I play most are Norton CC (45 minute drive- open to public after 12), Butterbrook (45 min drive), Blackstone (50 min drive), and Pembroke.

You can join Rockland golf course for $1400 which lets you play Rockland, Norwood, Newton commonwealth and 2 others I think. Whatever courses Sterling golf manages for one price.

Totally not worth it IMO

Agreed!! Two words - "Sterling Management"

Pembroke is a good course to play on occasion but certainly not all the time. We played last year and witnessed something that made me never want to play there again.

You can't just throw that out there and then not tell what it is!

Touche

So we are playing either 8 or 9 and there is a pond in the middle of a couple of the holes. I see 2 maintenance guys sitting in a cart over near where i put my ball (in the woods obviously) I get close and they have a .22 rifle. I figure theyre going to shoot it in the air and scare some geese or what not. They drive over by the water, proceed to aim directly at the geese and shoot them. I watched them shoot one execution style. There was one that was trying to fly after it was shot and can all you can hear is it howling in pain. Now I have no problem with hunting or anything but here are the things that irked me...

1. If youre going to do it, dont do it at 11 am with a crowded golf course.

2. One of the first things you learn about shooting a .22 is it can easily bounce off the water.

3. There were alot of geese yet no goose poop on the course at all so they were literally causing no problem.

4. If youre going to "hunt" them, at least wait till its in season (unless theres a special permit)
