Can anyone identify these Titleist irons?

Recommended Posts

This is a six iron from the set I used as a kid back in the late Eighties. I think I started using them in 1988, perhaps 89, but I picked them up second hand. I'm not sure if they're the 1982 or 1979 model. I can try and get more pictures up if required, but it will take a day or so. I still hit them whenever I am over, but they have sweet spots the size of the devil's heart. I play the PW as a gap wedge and the SW as my "everything" wedge in the set I keep over in the UK.

That was my 1st real set of irons! Pretty sure mine were 80. In 81 they moved the stamp to the toe and squared it up a bit if i remember correct.

When I looked at the previous model page on the Titleist site, the 79-80 model seemed the most similar, as later models have different stamping, but the back of the 82-83 model isn't shown, so it still leaves that as a possibility. But I'm starting to lean towards the earlier model.

I think you could be right, I see my dad later so I'm going to have a look at his.

That would be great if you could ask him!

Asked me dad and he didn't have a Scooby! Said he was using them in 81 because he had a golfing trip to Spain. So I would guess 79 model, sorry but my dad is 75 now and remembering last week is a challenge these days!

You can try ironfinder.com they might be able to narrow it down a bit.

Looks like the 81 model.

Thanks for the links (and you too, Yzmerf). Looking at mine, the "forged" is on the heel like the 79-80 model, so I am now 99% certain that is what I have.

It's either a 79' or 80' model. The only difference is the 79' model has a plain, non- knurled hosel, unlike the 1980's model.

Ah! That's interesting. Mine have two lines of what are best described as slashes (/////////) around the hosel, so I guess that makes them the 1980 model?

Thank you.

My local team aren't quite in the same flight as yours, but the uniform is basically the same as Gryffindor's, so we have that going for us. Which is nice.

Come to Edinburgh. We have a quidditch club that practices in our local park. I jest not....

I can believe it.

Years ago, in the heart of the Harry Potter craze, I was sat in a bar in the outskirts of Tokyo with a friend when this Japanese woman (in her 30s, I would guess) starts talking to us. She gets really animated when I tell her that I was from the UK, and proceeds to tell us that she is about to go to go over to study magic there as there's a really good school for it.

We thought she was joking, except she continued to insist it was real, and even claimed that Hogwarts was based on it.

No prob. I got the information from an old golf club identification & value guide that was published back in the 1980's that I have. It goes into detail with photos of all the major club manufacturers up until the late 80's.
