They are aerating Dubs September 27th - 30th, so you're going to be less than happy.

Dubsdread is horrendous beyond belief after aeration. In fact, I think it's usually pretty beat up, but the window you're talking about is notoriously terrible. I wouldn't pay/do it then, that's just me.

The least fun I've ever had on a championship course. There's a reason the pros left that place. The fact that Tiger shot 62 there is the most impressive thing he's ever done.

The pros left because they are whiny, pampered crybabies. The course is a solid, no-nonsense course. It's my favorite in the Chicago area.

Agreed, the pros will b**** about any course not named Augusta National or Oakmont... Not sure why all the hate for Dubs?!

This is a solid course, one I have played many times and as recently as late July. It's usually in pretty good shape, I've never had a round that took longer than 4 hours (or at least one where I wasn't spraying my drives all over the property!), and I really believe that even at ~$150 it's one of the best values in the Chicagoland area. I will say this, though, don't play it with the greens punched - it's already difficult enough that you don't need that f*@$ing with you're psyche...

I'll actually take a stab at my own question... I think the main reason Dubs gets a bad rep (other than the aforementioned pros bitching about it) is that it's not a private club, and therefore doesn't play like a private club. It never was even when it hosted the Western/BMW. I think because it held a tour stop for so long people associate it with a pristine private club typical of most (not all, I know) tour venues. It just isn't - it's rough around the edges but well kempt where necessary, the course is challenging but fair and right in front of you, the greens aren't immaculate but roll true, it's not a Donald Ross or Bobby Jones design but a mature track with a solid foundation, it's scenic in some areas but won't take your breath away, the staff isn't going to greet you at your car door but will have a cold beer ready at the turn... It's like that prom date back in the day that was a 6-7 cuz most of us weren't cool enough or good looking enough to date the head cheerleader - if you go in with an open mind, have fun, treat her with respect, can identify the real beauty behind all the makeup and the fancy dress... She may actually put out at the end of the night leaving you pleasantly surprised the next morning. You may even call her up for a second date ;)

Anyway, it's a fun course to play - a great layout with multiple tees for all handicaps, great service and managed well, solid practice facility, etc. Also, it does have the history of the Western/BMW, so if you're not fortunate to ever play the private tour venues, it is fun to play the course and discover first hand (hopefully not the hard way!) why it was a tour level course - i.e. deep green side bunkers, strategically placed fairway bunkers and hazards, multi-tiered greens, false fronts, change in elevation, sloped fairways, risk/reward par 4s and 5s, par 3s that will give you nightmares for weeks, etc, etc. - in other words she's got features you don't see at every public/resort course.

I say give it a go once the greens are healed, and let us know what you think...

Because in the same breath they pushed for their buddy Luke Donald's course in Conway Farms.

I couldn't agree more. I generally try to play it once a year, and will likely get out tomorrow or Friday before they aerate next week.

There was a lot of lobbying to get the BMW moved to Conway Farms where I believe several tour pros hold memberships. My hunch is that the kvetching about Dubs had more to do with getting it moved than the changes made during the last renovation.

Lol. I was typing my response when you posted. Yup, a number of vocal critics were trying to get it moved.

I always enjoy Dubs when I play it. Have not made it out this year but I have heard not great things about the course conditions there right now, one as recent as last week. I agree that the course looks great and plays great, if I had one knock on the place it would be the par 3's and the lack of variety they offer.

Played it this morning and was disappointed in the condition of the greens, granted we are coming up on October and they are aerating next week but I have played on nicer greens for half the price. Tee boxes were fantastic and once the grounds crew got around to raking the bunkers (we were the first group out so a little ahead of the ground crew) they were the most consistent bunkers I have every played out of.

I played 2 rounds there on Friday, and put me down in the disappointed category. The tee boxes and fairways were fine. The greens looked beat up. They were very soft, which didn't help, as the spike marks really stood out.

The bunkers were shocking. There was little to no sand in many of them, and the lining was sticking up in many places. Not quite what I expected on a high end course, and certainly not what I've encountered in years past.

One could easily conclude that they were cutting back on maintenance. For $155, one expects much better.
