Got the bug out here in the Pacific Northwest...

Recommended Posts

After telling myself I wouldn't enjoy golf and avoiding every invite to go hit with friends/family for YEARS I finally gave in over the summer and got the golf bug.... bad.. I signed up for 1 year of GolfTec lessons with a fantastic instructor here in Portland and am 3 months in and just got my club fitting done and have clubs in hand. All I can think about now is golf. I am driving my wife insane even though she's the one that really pushed me to take this sport up. Every time she walks into a room I seem to have a club in my hand and am swinging which leads to lecture after lecture about how the garage is the only acceptable area to swing a club.

I'm giving myself every ability to learn as fast as possible and am in the process of setting up a Skytrak home sim in my garage with hopes that by Thanksgiving I can practice every day without excuse and make the most of my first year while I am taking lessons.

If you are also from the Pacific Northwest and live in the Portland area feel free to say hi!

Hello aphillipe and welcome to WRX from a fellow Rose City hack!

Over 10 years ago I caught the bug after playing limited golf most of my life. I, too, joined WRX to help feed the need. The PNW is represented well here. You will cross paths with many. I'm honored to be your first.

Sounds like you belong here.. Reminds of the thread a year or two back that was about: "Swinging clubs in the house." haha.

The wife thought golf was a good idea, till she says shes divorcing you if you don't spend more time at home, and you tell her that you'd be good pawning her engagement ring for a new set of Miuras.

That's a joke. Don't do that. That being said, I'm almost certain that it's happened here before.

Sounds like you're making the absolute most of getting into the game. That's awesome! I wish I would've been able to do that. It's a game we all strive to be less crappy at, but getting less crappy sooner is good!

Welcome to WRX!\

BTW, make sure you follow the two other guys that commented. They're a couple agreeable fellows who are worth listening to.

aphillipe, Tcann32 just demonstrated why you should follow his posts. LMAO selling the engagement ring for Miuras and endeavor to be the least crappy as possible at this game...that's WRX wisdom!

FWIW I swing my clubs in the house all the time. So far I've only had to take my cat to the vet's emergency room once. (He's fine now...with 8 lives left...)

Up until about a year ago I lived just north of Portland for 11 years, but have since moved to Bend. I would recommend investing in high quality rain gear, cart gloves, disposable hand warmers, a couple of waterproof/mud shoes, and a long screw driver to dig up ball out of the soft fairways in the rain/winter months. If you ever make to Bend give me a shout and we see if we can tee it up.

Well, we've had a Rose City (not really a) hack check-in, a friendly welcome from the High Desert, and so I will welcome you from the banana belt tropics of the south. No, not the southern hemisphere, but simply south of Eugene, or the other half of the state as we like to call it, The State of Jefferson, southern Oregon.

Welcome to GolfWRX!

Thanks all for your kind words!!! I'm so excited for spring to come and get out on some courses and humiliate myself! Still getting my gear sorted so I can actually go play a round. Everything for my home sim minus the impact screen and frame has arrived so hopefully those will show before Thanksgiving so I can practice daily moving forward at home.

Seriously, why wait for spring to play? Afraid of a little rain? PNW WRXers play year round!!! Represent!!!

Man I am jealous you have an indoor sim. There is a cool man cave thread somewhere around here and the coolest caves have indoor sims. The cool thing about WRX is that there's always someone nuttier about golf than you.

Oh and BTW if you wanna play sometime feel free to PM me.

Welcome to the asylum. There's quite a few of us in the PNW and especially in PDX.

I'll echo the recommendation to pay close attention to DeNinny. He's an absolute sage...

spud3 you are way too kind. LOL call me Jeffrey...

BTW aphillipe if you ever get a chance you should play a round with spud3. (Just don't bet him straight up....he's got some game...)

  • 2 weeks later...

Your story sounds identical to me, except I don't have a wife or kids, just a girlfriend who described golf as "my mistress." I'm a total newb too and I'm 100% addicted (~4 months since I first picked it up and this is literally my first post here - found the site a few days ago). I'm in PDX as well if you ever want to get out for a round (an high scoring one).

As an aside - I'm curious about how you went about settling on your simulator choice. I'm very early on in researching and would appreciate any helpful links/reviews you found that led you to what you ended up getting. I'm sure there is good info buried on this site somewhere that I'll search for too. Thanks in advance!

Hey, I've been to Oregon....

Sounds like you've got the golf bug bad, and that's a good thing :taunt:

As for swinging golf clubs indoors...the house where I grew up has a few bruises in it from me doing that (including one or two my parents never found out about...).

My personal favourite is a hole in the ceiling plaster of my bedroom that I put there when I was "demonstrating" Eamon Darcy's swing to my brother.

For reference, you can find examples of Eamon Darcy's swing in the Tour Talk Forum in the "Ugliest Swings on Tour NOT NAMED Jim Furyk" Thread.

Then you might understand why I put a hole in the 10-foot high ceiling.

I shouldn't have used a 5-wood in my demonstration....

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
