Tierjas creek in rancho santa margarita. Not too far from Newport. A bit inland and south. You won't be looking at the pacific, but it's "only" about $100.

Peiican is very nice and the views of the ocean and the canyons are wonderful, but weekend rates are $300+. Ouch!!

San Clemente muni used to be nice. It's not too far south of Newport. Haven't played in years but I always enjoyed it.

Edit....Tustin Ranch used to be nice also. Just a bit inland. It's up to about $200 though now. Orange County golf is soooo expensive. I grew up in Corona Del Mar. I Moved to Ohio 9 years ago and I am still shocked at how affordable golf is back here. Dozens of nice courses to chose from within a 25 mile drive at $25-$40.... with a cart!!

Thanks for the info. Yeah golf up here in Oregon is a fraction of the cost. Hell you can go play all 5 courses at Brandon and lodging for a couple hundred more than in would cost to play Pelican Hills twice!lol!

I've only played Pelican Hill (north & south), Oak Quarry, & San Clemente GC in that area.

Pelican Hill (post renovation) was pricey but decent.

Oak Quarry (50 minutes northeast of Newport Coast) was fun & not expensive.

San Clemente (30 minutes south) has a dull front nine, but the back nine climbs into the hills and is good.

Pelican Hill over $300

Oak Creek $150-180

Tustin Ranch $150-180

Tijeras Creek $100

Black Gold $100

Arroyo Trabuco $100

Monarch Beach is around $200. Id rather play Oak Creek or even trump national

Monarch Beach is a bit short and uninteresting outside of a couple holes

Pelican Hill is great, as is Trump National... you've just got to pay through the nose for both. The inland empire is where you'll find some great value though as some have mentioned. Goose Creek, Oak Quarry, Sierra Lakes, Hidden Valley, and a few more are always under $100 and great tracks.

You'll have to make a bit of a drive for the best overall value though. I believe this to me Maderas, which can be pricey as well, but a much better value than others that cost more. It's maybe 1 hour or more from Newport.

As far as very local, Oak Creek and Strawberry farms are 2 of my favorites. But those will cost $125 to $175

Resurrecting an old thread for a SoCal trip I have coming up in 2 weeks, staying in Newport Coast. Playing with family, at least one of which is very budget-conscious. Looking at sub-$75 rounds within 30 minutes drive. Any opinions on Costa Mesa CC or Navy Golf Course? Which one would you play, or is there a better option?

Honestly, this is a tough one. I have not played the Navy course, but have heard good things about the value there. Costa Mesa is a really tight muni, although it has been awhile since I've been out there, so I can't speak of conditions. If you're looking to stay within 30 minutes of Newport and under $75, I'd recommend looking trying to play at twilight. Oak Creek, Arroyo Trabuco and Strawberry Farms are all around $75 twilight during the week. I like Oak Creek and Arroyo the best, although Arroyo can beat you up if you don't keep it between the buoys. Check out Costco for there Strawberry Farms Certificiates. $150 for two rounds. You have to pay an extra $25 to play before noon on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, but in my opinion, it's one of the better OC deals you'll find.

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, we're planning on playing early on a Monday, since we all have small children (and impatient wives) waiting for us at the hotel. Twilight would be more expensive, once you factor in the marriage counseling!

I've played Arroyo Trabuco, and agree it's a beautiful course (and yes, it kicked my butt).

When you say Costa Mesa is "tight", what do you mean? Narrow fairways, well maintained, or fun to play?

Ended up booking at Strawberry Farms through birdiebug. $70 at 7:30 on a Monday. Normally $100-$125. Thanks for the input, and for allowing me to ride your thread, OP!

Strawberry is pretty good - the back 9 is tight though. Front is much better and more playable. Good price though and frankly that is what it's worth. Enjoy the round.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
