Anyone switched from Sky Caddie to Garmin?

Recommended Posts

I am currently using a Sky Caddie Touch and my current year's subscription is coming due again in about a month. I have been running into problems lately with my Sky Caddie, jumping to wrong hole, running slow, etc. I have used Sky Caddie devices for years, because of their reputation in accuracy, but I have been hearing great things about the Garmin as well. I am contemplating buying a Garmin G8 but wanted some feedback from others who have switched from Sky Caddie to Garmin. I am particularly interested to see if there is an online portal to sync with the Garmin. I like the Club SG/Sky Golf 360 to track my scores, handicap, shots, etc. Does Garmin have anything like this? Any other feedback to help me compare the 2 brands would be greatly appreciated!

I made the switch and glad I did. I was having trouble with my desktop and it became a pain to download courses. I used the skycaddie online thing very rare and the garmin even rarer. Not sure that is a word. G8 is extremely nice. Very fast. I thought I would hate the touch screen but it is pretty cool. Took a few rounds to get use to it. My main dislike about the Garmin is the holster. It doesn't swivel and there is no skin above with an attachment to a belt clip. It holds a charge a lot longer than my SGX. I enjoyed the skycaddie but got tired of the yearly fees. Lots of information but I don't need to know if the green has a false front. I just need to hit the green. Make the switch, you will be happy I think.

My SG2 had a long and productive career. Absolutely loved it with the exception of having to download the courses and then confirm it was there. Made the move to the Garmin, although is just a 6 but like it, a lot. Other than having to remember to charge it, the device is self sufficient. The one criticism is I wish it was a bit easier to get more accurate numbers to hazards, etc. It has the ability but it isn't the easiest.

Make sure that you choose a device that is compliant with USGA and local rules if you play in any tournaments. The Garmin G7 and G8 are generally not compliant due to their inclusion of slope, although with the latest rules changes and whatnot, I'm not quite sure where things exactly stand these days. I just know that many of the guys in my league carry the G6 to avoid any possible issues.

Oh, and I use SkyCaddie Mobile. Of course it doesn't relieve you of the annual fee, but I believe that running SkyCaddie Mobile on my phone is far superior to the Touch device.

I can get 2 rounds out of my Touch on a single charge. I can barely get a day's use out of my Smartphone without using it as a GPS device. What's your phone's battery level after a round of golf using the mobile app?

I believe you can turn off the slope feature on the G7 and G8, making them USGA compliant. If not that's a fools mistake on Garmins behalf.

switched from Garmin to Skycaddie a few years ago due to Garmin being (sometimes) up to 8 yards out compared to fellow competitors skycaddies.

I do get occasional issues with not moving to next hole etc but I'll take accuracy over functionality. Bear in mind its been 3 years since I switched so I'm comparing older tech.

I have an LG G4 and I'm usually around 25-30% at the end of the round (starting off at 100%). SkyCaddie Mobile includes the shot tracking features which I almost always use. SkyCaddie Touch does not include the shot tracking.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
