Hogan Apex II White Cameos

I have noticed a slight bend at the bottom of the hosel just above the heels. It's more pronounced

on the long irons. I have a one iron and can post a photo later but so you know what I am talking about

I have included a few pics from the internet. At first I thought it was damage but on closer inspection and looking at all 360 angles it appears square and I believe now the way it was made. My staffs are all straight line from that angle, in fact I believe the Hogans are the only blades I have seen with this "bend".

Can anyone give some info for this? What is the reasoning?

I'd be interested in replies. I got this set new BITD when they were introduced & really wanted to like them. Had them built to match the specs of my '73 Apex satin back irons...but just never warmed up to them.

Maybe part of it was this grind, altho I know there are lots of people who love them....I just wasn't one of them

Isn't that the Hogan underslung hosel?

I think that's it Steve. ..... yeah I found a 1 iron for my brother's Christmas gift. He has a later model Apex but never bought the 1. He hits a 1 iron very well. So I amthinking of reshafting for him. Now I am tempted to hit this a few times myself before wrapping. : ). Will post later.

It's a Hogan design thing called the "underslung Hosel Design", it helped bring the shaft Axis closer to the CG. do a search for - How it's Made Not allowed because of spam 1999 Hogan Blades

Pronounced with the Apex II, barely (?) with the '88's, gone with the '99's. The latter being a Jeff Sheets design. The only ones in inventory for pic purposes.

Likely most are familiar with the "How it's made 1999 Hogan Apex" page. If not, a google search with the aforementioned parameters will bring it to the top of the search results.

The Apex II's aren't so bad, way better than Magnums.

I find it hard to judge irons, except on superficial grounds of how they look. I'm much more consistent in my impressions of how things look than of how they perform.

I can think of 2 sets of irons that I initially found hard to hit. Mizuno TP Originals and Mac Muirfields. Ended up loving both. But if something doesn't look right to my eye, then I find it hard to get over that.

Great clubs that they are, Eye 2s look at best funky and futuristic to me. I never really grew to love the look of them behind the ball, especially out of any sort of marginal lie. And when the swing is off, "fugly" is never far away from "funky".

Having said all that, if I could keep only one set of Hogans, it might well be the Apex IIs. It wouldn't kill me to have to play with PCs or Redlines, but I might vote the IIs the best looking iron ever designed and I don't think I've hit anything better in tight summer conditions. Just love the curves of that back muscle pad. Not totally sold on the Equalizer, but 1 - 9 and the same era Special SI are about perfect. YMMV of course.

i have a set of the first directors and they are fine. still havnt played the second generation directors. if the apex 2 was so good -whydid they go right back to the stye sim to the 73 apex with the pc and red line?

Funnily enough, they then went right back to a carbon copy of the Apex IIs with the Ft. Worths immediately after the PC-Redline-Grind years. And then in '94 you move on to the Channelbacks, which are a whole other kettle of fish. But from 72-93 they more or less alternated between the original Apex design and the Apex II design, with minor variations throughout. FWIW, Hogan's last set of personal irons was a set of Apex IIs that he played throughout the PC-Redline-Grind years. Not trying at all to pick a fight, as I love each of the designs, I just find the history of it all fascinating.

  • 2 weeks later...

JP has two sets of Apex IIs, played PCs and red lines, both models. Never really had a problem with any of them. Admittedly, you need to put a good swing on them, especially the long irons. Always thought the Apex IIs were the loveliest of the models he's owned...

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
