Club changes and jumpers

Made some changes in the past few months and and finding I'm getting some jumpers. I switched from Srixon 545 irons to Ping G. Noticed about a club increase in distance with the 7-pw, but am finding with the 6 and 5 occasional shots that are waaaaay longer than I anticipated. 2 clubs sometimes. Historically I hit a 5 about 175. Since I switched I'll hit one 200 yards on occasion. Sometimes it's fine, but I flew a handful of greens in my last few rounds by large margins.

 

Also switched from a Ping G30 driver to a 2016 M2. I'm finding it's also more random. With the G30 I would range 230-250 regularly. With the M2 I'm seeing most around 230 but will get an occasional 275. In fact, about 3 rounds ago I hit one 289. But that was one in that round. I never hit the G30 that far. The G30 seemed to be more consistent. The M2 seems to average shorter, but top out far longer on the rare hit.

 

Maybe it's just a learning curve with the new gear. Or maybe this is characteristic of these clubs and I'm just experiencing it?

Tried the 2017 M2 yesterday, was the longest of the bunch for me.

Its unlikely to be the clubs. Its much more likely you are getting better. You can't hit shots that far without a center-face strike, and on a center-face strike most clubs are identical (both are the maximum of the legal limit). It is outside of the center where we usually see clubs that are "longer" than other clubs. For example, they all hit right at the limit when hit by a testing robot.

 

When I started getting significantly better this started happening to me. You will start hitting more and more like that until you have to adjust your distance and your planning. It can be a frustrating process. From April to June-ish of this year I had no idea how far my irons would go. If i got forward completely and hit down, they'd go X and if I scooped like I used to they'd go X-20.

 

Its very unlikely this is your equipment. Just my opinion, but congrats on the improvement! Typically golf improvement shows up as "random" shots that, if the golfer keeps at it, become less and less random.

 

Just my opinion though. Nothing to do with equipment with those massive differences in the numbers. 7 yards? sure. 25 with a 5 iron? no way thats just the irons. Its you. Good work, IMO.

Did you take wind or lie into account? You can get jumpers when a ball is sitting up in the fringe.

Driver I understand......M2 is weird, some go great others not so great...it's strike and angle into ball....lower spin so needs proper strike to make most....it takes a certain strike to get a bomb.....similar to all lower spinning heads

 

Irons should not be so dependent unless your strike is all over map.....I played those irons and thought they were pretty consistent....just not for me

What about the shaft? Lofts staying the same, the shaft can have a major influence.

I used to think I was getting jumpers.....then I realized I was actually making good impact for once. When you hear about jumpers on tv and such it is grass getting between the club face and reducing spin, for high swing speeds this leads to "flyers". When you are a mid to high handicapper like you and I a jumper just means you didn't fat it.

I get the jumper phenomenon with my Apex CFs. Had one just yesterday. Had a 6i go about 7 yards more than I am used to...into the wind.

 

Definitely could be that I just nutted it I guess but I never had this issue with my Fly-Z irons. Ordered a set of Z765 Friday so we will see if those do it.

This is a great post. It can also happen when you hit it "too low" on the face but still in the center. A "flyer" can also happen when the ball is "tee'd" up in the rough and you can hit the ball with the sweet spot right at its equator.

 

However the numbers from the OP arnt flyers or jumpers (175 to 200). A driver from 230 to 289 has nothing to do with equipment unless you think the visual or feel of different equipment can give you a better center strike. I've never experienced this but it is possible I suppose.

With 'spring face' clubs there is a possibility of getting 'flyers.' Striking the ball slightly high on the club face may mean that you get a strike that is still in the 'sweet zone' but you generate far less spin causing the ball to travel significantly further. Iirc this was an issue with either the Rocketbladez or Speedbladez tour versions for the TM Tour players. DJ and Rose were getting 'flyers' from the middle of the fairway and switched back to the TM MB after trying them out.

I did spend the fall of last year working hard to improve my irons. My iron play has improved significantly and my distance has increased along with it.

 

Yesterday I had a proper fitting session and found that the Ping G's I've been playing are 2 degrees upright (which I was unaware of) and contributing to left misses. They adjusted to standard lie and immediately I started hitting it straighter with more consistent dispersion. We found that the occasional rocket from the Ping G's was partial to shots where I turned it over a little too much resulting in a lower, and slightly offline left trajectory. Once the lie was adjusted those shots seemed to stop. Everything felt more square at address to my body and eye. So I guess I just stopped reacting to what I didn't know. Interesting stuff.

 

After that I hit the Mizuno JPX-900 Hot Metals and fell in love with them. Same performance as the Ping G for me, but no question a better sound and feel. Looking down at each side by side, the confidence level for the GI player like me was identical to my eye. On the 5 iron, the help out of the back from set up visually looks identical. But side to side, overall the Mizuno looks far sharper. So I ordered a set!

 

The M2 driver is still a ongoing process. When I bought it I was in a bit of a slump with my driver as I had dedicated about 6 months to iron work. So it's likely I'm just finding my rhythm again. It's got a great sound and feel, and when I catch it like I want, it really performs. I hit several in the 250 range yesterday, which is my sweet spot and where I want to hit it.
