Two questions about Bag Boys

Recommended Posts

How much do you tip them and...
I used to be a cart guy and I have always wondered what the general golf population thinks about this.

-How much do you tip a Bag Boy who took care of you for that day? (i.e. got your clubs out of the storage room, cleaned them, took them to your car, etc...)

-If you regularly play at a particular course do you know most of the Bag Boy's names?

I've always given the kids at my club $5. They always have my bag ready on the cart when I get there, and make sure it gets put away right away after. Cart is also always set up with 2 waters and a wet towel.

Well back when I was a pro it was 20 bucks. 10 in and 10 out. That is because I played for free. Also threw the starter 10, and that was per guy in our group. So it was usually a nice day for the bag guy.

Now that I have to pay to play, I would say a little less. Maybe 5 in and 5 out. That is because I know the business and I know those guys are making less per hour than a guy at BK, add in the tips and they do ok.

A good bag guy can make a great day of golf better, that is for sure. Plus if you are from out of town, they usually know where all the good spots are to go drink, eat and go out. Worthwhile to take care of them. The guys that did not take care of the "boys" as we called em' and asked for info on the good places, etc., they typically got the bad info, and the guys that took good care of the boys, got the good info. Kind of funny actually.

Forgot to add in about the names...I have worked at mostly private and resort course, and that is part of the job, greeting people by name if you know them, and most will reciprocate. I did know some of the guys names at other courses, but that was because I played tournaments with some of them, and hung out with some outside of work.

Please no comments on how you don't tip a cart guy who doesn't do a thing for you, that's not what I am curious about.

Sorry about this, but I don't like this statement at all, and I'm not trying to start anything, but I'm just trying to put this myth to rest.

First off, I'm a cart kid, who stays outside for all 9 hours of my shift. My job is not to just take your cart and put it away, but it is to wash and clean the cart (including such items as Cigarettes, Cigars, beer cans, tissues, and the list goes on), gas it, inspect it, dry it off, put a scorecard and pencil in it, then "stage" it where customers can pick them up. I also work the bag drop and bring customers bags from that location and put them on the carts. I know for a fact that if I'm lucky, 1 out of 15 people will give me any sort of tip. I don't have a chance to wipe off people's clubs because before they bring the carts in, as they speed off to their cars to put their clubs away. Sorry for the rant, however, some of us actually do alot for the customer. No need for reply, just wanted to throw it out there for thought.

As for when a bag boy takes care of my bag and clubs, its only happened once: at Disney. He took my clubs from the bag drop, put them on the cart, and washed them after I got done with my round. Threw him a $5 because I didn't have any ones! But he was a nice man anyway.

i did the same last semester at school. being a bag drop boy is a TON of work. cleaning/drying all of the carts and putting them away is a nightmare. having to walk 1/4 of a mile to pick each one up drains you. i like cleaning my own clubs, so i dont really care if they do or dont do that. but from now on, if there is effort shown, i will take care of them. at the club i worked, bag boys were also the cleaning crew for the clubhouse. ive had some tough jobs (construction, caddy, etc), but this one is up there.

I am a cart guy, a grown adult male, I work at an exclusive golf resort in the mountains of North Carolina, where the majority of our members are seasonal florida residents. I make every effort to introduce myself to all the members, to learn their wives names, what type of business they are in, and to be the first to greet them every morning when I work. I am a professional cart guy and I am treated and tipped as such. Every tip from the $1 guy to the daily $20 from some of my high rollers are all equally accepted, no one is treated any different regardless of the tip. It always comes down to what level of service your provide your members, I never expect a tip, but they are always appreciated!!!

Hate to be harsh, but as a cart kid, IT'S YOUR JOB to wash the carts, clean them out, gas it, and set it up for the next guy. Why in the world do you expect to be paid EXTRA for doing the job you signed up for?

Tips are for jobs above and beyond the call of duty.

This coming from someone who worked in the bag room when I was 16-17 (21 years ago!) who made $2.35/hour with minimal tips at a very nice private club.

thank you! i couldnt agree more, its their job, they signed up for it, why should they get extra money for just doing what theyre supposed to do, maybe if they gave me a couple cokes and a sleeve of premium balls in that cart they gave me, then i would give them a tip. but until that day they just need to keep doing their jobs :partytime2:

not an attack, just an observation, why get paid extra if you dont do anything extra?

I don't tip people for things that I can do myself. Waiter: no tip. Cart/Bag Boy: no tip. Proctologist: big tip. :partytime2:

Seriously, I don't tip the cart kids at my club. At best, they simply pull the bag out of my car and put it on the cart. I'm not going to give somebody $2 for literally 30 seconds of work. They also don't unload the bags or clean the clubs at the end of the round at my club (and frankly I don't want anybody messing my with my sticks to begin with).

I also play between 2 and 5 times per week. I generally don't carry cash at all. I'm not going to start carrying a wad of singles just to tip the cart kids. Instead, I contribute to the "christmas fund" that the members at the club pull together for the golf staff. I'll throw in maybe $100-200 as my "annual tip". Judging by the response I got from the fund organizer last year, I suspect that it was one of the larger "donations."

Do you tip the guy at the hardware store for helping you find the right bolt? How about the clerk at the video store for helping you find a movie? How about the pro in the shop for selling you a shirt?

There are certain jobs where their pay wage is determined by the amount of tips their are expected to get. Waiters make most of their money off tips. Bag Boys are similar. When I had my first job the Head Pro said, we pay $6.50 an hour plus tips.

I don't tip the guy at the hardware store because he is paid accordingly and a tip is not necessary.

IMO, $6.50 per hour is plenty for pulling bags out of cars and putting them on carts. It isn't rocket science. And that's about 3 times the hourly wage of a waiter.

I take it you've never worked at a hardware store....

I worked at home depot for a couple years, and NO, they're not "paid accordingly" ;-)

I would, however have the occasional guy slip a $5 or $10 spot in to my apron for going above and beyond what was expected.

I fully agree, for normal service that should be within the "job description", no tip required. If the kid busts his hump and makes your day that much smoother, throw him a couple bucks, for sure.

I only play the daily fee courses. The only guys i tip is the one that cleans the clubs after the round. And that's only a couple of bucks. If they get paid minimum wage that's plenty. I busted my hump working in a kitchen or other various small jobs for minimum wage plus maybe a couple $0.25 cent raises in there.

If I every do belong to a private club it will certainly be at a no tipping\annual tipping facility. I don't think i should need to keep pulling out $'s every time i turn around at a club.

I agree. It's not rocket science to pull bags. I do however think that if a bag boy cleans your clubs, takes them to your car, etc, you need to throw him a little something. Plus, I will say this: Not that I ever did this because I have more respect than this, but I would say that if your the kind of member who never tips and requests bag boys to give you special treatment don't expect your bag to be handled with care once it gets into the storage room. I have seen multiple bags dragged across the room and shoved into the shelf because a member requested outrageous things and didn't throw the kid a dime.

I don't think it is necessary for a bag boy to be tipped if he is only pulling your bag from storage and loading it on your cart-that is basic stuff and I don't think any bag boy expects a tip after that. However if you want to have your cart loaded with a damp towel, ice water, etc tell the bag boys because they will do it--you just need to throw them a little something.

Also, and I don't think anyone has had much debate with this yet, but I think it is only fair to learn the bag boys first names. Most of the bag boys end up memorizing most of the members names, and it is only curtious to call them by their first name since they are wearing a name tag anyways. You would be surprised how many members don't even know one bag boys name even though they see and interact with them on at least a weekly basis.

The problem is that a lot of these kids are looking to get into, or already are in the business. And it is a tough way to get started, and some rely on the tips as income, just like waiters. Unlike waiters, they are not assured to be tipped to offset their poor minimum wage. The golf industry is really poor when it comes to paying it's workers, (one reason why I opted to get out of it, after being a pro for a long time). A lot of courses will hire bag boys or cart kids under the guise of well this job only pays 7.00 an hour but you will average 3 dollars an hour in tips. I know this because I have hired kids and used that line myself (but luckily it was true). Depending on where you are in the country it might be the truth.

I am not saying telling anyone what to do. I have just been on the other side of the counter so to speak, for a few years as a cart kid, and for 15 years as a pro. So I know what the story is. The non-tippers were kind of a joke around the club, and they were known by everyone. It was funny to see many of the guys scatter when they showed up. Makes me laugh when I think about it. Although, the work is fairly easy, but the tips were a necessary part of my income that I needed to survive and pay bills. We also wiped down your clubs, and cleaned off your shoes after the round, not just grabbed the carts. I did my job regardless of the tips, but it was a lot easier to hear about that 90, and all that went along with it, with a 5 spot in my hand.

Tip if you want to, don't tip if you don't want to. Totally up to you. This is America and you can do what you want. I just wish that they people that did not tip could stand back and see the service that is given to the people that do. Sad, but true.

How many rounds an hour are being played at your clubs? I'd think getting $2 out of 25% of the players is still bringing in over $10 an hour, plus you have wages to go on top of that. Since most are kids in school I think I'd jump at that opportunity. If you're talking adults with all the responsibilities of putting a roof over your head then I can see the complaints.

Been on vacation, finally got to a computer.

Not a problem, I just wanted to put that out there.

As for those who don't want to tip kids like me, just don't leave all your garbage behind for me to pick up, with beer spilled all over the place, along with your used tissues and cigarette butts, and I have no problem with no tip.

I get paid minimum wage, and its tough to save up for a car and gas money, along with "fun" money when you aren't raking in the big bucks. Factor in the fact that college isn't going to pay for itself and suddenly you realize how valuable every dollar you get is. Its unfortunate, but minimum wage doesn't get kids my age far these days, like it did 30 years ago. I know of inflation, but things these days are just rediuculous to buy, like the $24000 sports car, and the $25000 college tuition. Every dollar counts. We have 60 carts, if every cart tipped me $1 per day, I'd be a happy camper. If every other cart tipped me a dollar, I'd still be very happy. Sure I signed up for the job, but I also clean up the mess, talk to you about your round, and take care of your bag. I could just wash the cart, not talk to you, and not take care of your bag, but I decide to go above the normal job description.

Well you see, there's your problem. Don't drive the $24k sports car. My current car cost less than that new. and its 6 years old now. Back when I was in college i never even considered a new car because it was out of my price range. Instead you look for reliable used cars.

I paid (well am still paying) for my wn college. I paid for my own car and insurance etc. The only thing i didn't have to pay for when in college was the roof over my head (so long as I stayed with the parents). And don't blame inflation, cause this was less than 10 years ago. Instead blame all the luxuries you "need".

Hey man, sorry but I didn't mean to come off like that at all, in fact the opposite. I could just picture someone saying that cart guys never do a thing for them and that they don't tip them. I was once a cart guy too for a couple years, so I fully understand where your coming from.

It was more or less a reference to the muscle cars of yesteryear that could be had for pretty much dirt cheap, brand new, forgot to include that in my post. I deserved it. The college thing isn't going away though

Me, I'm looking for a Toyota something or other to ease the cost of gas.

Where did this whole "expecting tips" for doing a job thing start? I tip based on merit. I don't usually give 15% to my waitress/waiter. Sometimes it can be 30-40% if he/she was fantastic. I've also left nothing but a note to management about the terrible service.

If you deserve a tip, you'll get it, but you should NEVER expect it, IMHO.
