Haven't played in awhile, but the few times I did play, I loved Kernwood.

It's kind of the forgotten gem "up there" amongst the more famous north shore courses (Salem, Essex). Narrow and hilly, but a joy to play. Some of the higher elevation has water views, if I recall. Historically Jewish course, I believe. No idea if that is still the case

It's a private club, it's a great course from what I am told. Unless this has changed but there is a certain religious requirement to be a member, being Catholic I am not qualified. It's one of those "not in writing" deal because that would be discrimination but if you're a christian you will pick a different club.

Orange - In the Boston area, I know of Belmont, Pine Brook, Kernwood, and Blue Hill as the historically Jewish clubs. I know that Blue Hill in their transition to corporate ownership long dropped that feature of their membership. I know the rest are still member owned, but I will say that a friend put in the hard press for me to join Pine Brook (I share your religious affiliation) and my sense is that all of those clubs truly welcome members of any "persuasion", so long as you get through the usual process to join (whatever that will be).

Also, I've never played Blue HIll, but can't say enough positive things about the other three. I think Belmont has the best overall layout, but there isn't a course in the metro boston area in better shape than Pine Brook. Every time I have played there, the number of grounds keepers outweigh the number of golfers. Kernwood is just so cool, because it is this hidden gem. Unlike Salem, I believe it is actually IN Salem!

Well I would hope in 2017 a club would be less likely to exclude someone based on religious (or any other stupid) standing. I used to work for Tedesco in the 90's and it was one of those "If you're christian join Tedesco and if you're jewish join Kernwood". My brother caddied at Kernwood and said it was a sweet place. Yeah Salem CC being in Peabody always scratched my head. I live about a 1/2 mile from Ferncroft and would like to play there once to check it out.

I'll guess you're playing in the US Sr Open qualifier at Kernwood in May? If so, Kernwood is short and can be overpowered, you can pull driver everywhere and make it Pitch and Putt which is what you have to do in these events. If the weather is decent the qualifying score will be 65 or 66 --- you'll need to go low....

Not a bad track other than the two uphill par 3's where you really can't judge where the hole is or where the green edges are and distance calculation is always a challenge, practice round would help....Greens are always good...

If you're playing, I'll see you there.....

Good Luck!

Your response highlights the difference between a mid teens handicapper and a scratch golfer on golfwrx. You assume he's trying to figure out what score will be required to qualify, and I assume he is just trying to learn about the course + club! Good stuff either way, and hard to disagree with what you said if I imagined myself as a good golfer!

Why else might a guy from PEI Canada be looking at Kernwood? There's 200 Courses in MA and you pick one for course insight that just happens to have a qualifier for the SR Open which also happens to be at Salem CC -- Like I said, I was just guessing.. And in that area you have some really great tracks -- Essex, Myopia, Salem, Tedesco....

Your right, Ill be there for the qualifier. I thought Dennis pines would produce low numbers but it didn't and I thought Ipswich was tough and 65 was posted.. Nice advice I was wondering that as well with driver. Thanks Im hoping to play 2.5 rds if I can before the event. I heard 64 was course record so I was wondering how tough it was. I'll take all advice , thanks TIM
