odyssey counterbalanced putters - no counterbalance weight?

There's a review at dickssportinggoods site that one buyer removed the original grip off Odyssey Works Versa #7 Tank Counterbalance SuperStroke Putter and found out that there's no counterbalance weight in it. Is it true or was that a defect putter?

Just bought this putter today. Bought a 3.0 size Super Stroke grip to replace the 2.0 size that comes with it. When I removed the original grip, to my surprise, there was no counterbalance weight in the end of the shaft. When you read the specifications of the "non-miss leading" brands, they mention that there is a 50 gram or 40 gram weight in the shaft above the hand placement for counter balancing. Odyssey only gives you three extra inches of hollow shaft and call it counterbalance technology. That's a shame because that was the number one reason I purchased the club. Note, their advertising does not claim there are weights in the shaft. However, they knew what they were doing by claiming to have counterbalance technology. However, the quality of the club is still consistence with the high quality Odyssey is known for. But now I don't have the brand trust that I use to have.

A heavy grip can serve as a counterbalance. Not every company uses a weight.

SuperStroke counter core is an easy way to add more weight if necessary. Odyssey also makes the Tank Cruiser.

Unless it was a cruiser model it wouldn't have had weights in the shaft. Same way TM's "counter balanced" putters have been done. I dont personally consider a putter counter balanced unless there is a weight in the end of the shaft under the grip, but that's just my opinion.

heavy grip, interesting. But only 1-2 inches of grip is hanging above hand and most of section of grip is at or below hand so I wonder how effective counterbalance of heavy grip vs weight on top.

 

So TM's "counter balanced" putters does not have weight on top? interesting. I would also think to consider consider a putter counter balanced unless there is a weight in the end of the shaft under the grip.

Wait... the Tank putters are supposed to say "TANK" right under the number 7. I don't know if I'm just having trouble seeing it because it's blurry when I zoom in, but I don't see that it says Tank. I'm wondering if Odyssey accidentally sent a Tank grip on the standard 7. Or someone somehow swapped the grips at a DSG for a customer to make them happy and that club got pulled for an online order.. maybe I'm just blind but it doesn't look like it says Tank on that putter head.

Making the club shaft longer at say 38 or 40 inches, as Callaway and TM do, and the player gripping it "normally" at around 34" has 4-6 inches ABOVE the hands, counter balancing the putter.

Odyssey Works Tank putters use a 128 gram Superstroke and there are no weights inserted in the butt unlike the original Tanks (30 or 40 gram brass weight) or Cruisers (where it's screwed into the grip).

Back on topic, i used counterbalanced putters for awhile and never gripped 4-6 inches down on the putter. Maybe 2 inches at the most personally. But then again i always had my club fitter build my cb putters. Find a heavy head like a belly putter and cut it down and add a weight in butt end of shaft.

Could be the wrong grip, but after looking at the Tank putters in my shop it may just be hard to make out that it says Tank on that putter. It doesn't contrast that much from the brushed finish of the Works, so it is kind of tough to tell. However, I did pull down one of my Works putters from the floor and put a pick through the butt of the grip. As far as I can tell there is no weight installed and the counterbalance is achieved through use of the heavier and longer grip with a few inches of grip and shaft sitting above the hands.

I've own the Ping counterbalance which uses the heavy grip and I prefer it over the Superstroke with countercore. As long as the over all clup is balanced I could care less if I can see the weight or not.

I could be mistaken, but the SS counterbalance Grips (for sale individually)come with the weight plug and a cap plug, to be used in place of the weight of no counterbalance is desired.

Basically, it's a cap for the butt end that looks identical to the cap end of the weight. Red I believe...
