I took the plunge and bought some classic Hogan irons

Recommended Posts

I just had to post this because I'm so excited about these irons I scored off the "bay"... Hogan "Medallions" the early 80's models if I'm correct. I haven't had a chance to swing them yet as the weather has been horrid and free time is at a premium for me, I'm also kind of nervous that I might damage them because they look so nice!

Here are some pics...

The guy I bought them from claimed he was the original owner, all the shafts except for one are AMF Vector 3 shafts, the one oddball is a DG S100 that was a replacement for one he broke. I have no idea what the AMF shafts are like as again I've yet to swing them at anything. I just love the look of them though, I hope I can hit them reasonably enough to game them occasionally but if not, that's ok I'll enjoy showing them to people that are interested.

Don't be afraid to game them. We've all been lead to believe that blade irons are impossible to hit for anyone other than scratch players. This is not the truth. They maybe demanding, but not impossible. In fact, you maybe surprised how well you can play with them!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

This is how it starts ... and then some well-meaning Hoganista will draw your attention to something like this ...

... and so begins the long slippery slope to Hogan nirvana ... :)

"Do you need all those irons ?"

"Hell No ! But I want them .... " :)

I haven't measured the butt of the shafts, they've been re-gripped recently with a nice wrap style grip, similar to what I like on my wedges.

The shafts also seem to be the "pinned" style that I see on the older Hogan offerings, not sure what kind of trouble I'd run into trying to reshaft them... I figure I'll hit them see how I perform with them and then reshaft as necessary.

Yeah, I can see this slippery slope in front of me inching closer... the thing is the cost of picking some of these irons up is so low that impulse "shopping" could become a habit!

Thanks for the replies, I feel like a kid with a new bike that I have to ride around the neighborhood and show off... :-)

I bought a set of '88 Hogan redlines for the collectability factor 2 years ago. I was gaming a set of '09 Callaway Xforged at the time.

Then I took them to the range.

After that first session, I went home and stripped off the old grips, lengthened the original Apex 4's 1/2" and then had lie angles bent 2 deg flat.

Been gaming them ever since.

Went to a golf expo in Feb and tried to kick them out of the bag with the new Mizuno JPX900's but couldn't...it was a struggle because my inner club-ho was teasing me hard.

Just couldn't beat the feel. The JPX's looked prettier, i.e. new grooves, shinier, etc, but just made no sense.

Maybe next year!

Enjoy! They were meant to be played....

Hogan's Secret.......it's in plain sight but not for everyone...

Sumed-

Nice set of Ben Hogan Medallions....

Both Hogan Medallion forged iron models shown were RH Only. To my knowledge, there was a cast Hogan Medallion iron.

Blade Junkies Hogan iron poster shows only those RH models of the (Old) Ben Hogan Golf Company, up to 1999.

Slazenger Ben Hogan of the UK did offer LH persimmon wood models and LH Stainless Precision style iron models in the '50s, and LH Apex irons in the '70s.

Thanks, I'm finally going to hit them tonight so we'll see how it goes (fingers crossed)

Enjoy them and understand it will not be your last Hogan purchase. The sickness started for me with a set of 80's Directors and has progressed quickly to now having a set of 75 Apex's, 80's Medallions, White Cameo Apex II's, BH Grinds, and my favorite, the 92 Hogan Apex Redline Ft. Worth's. Add to that 3 classic Hogan bags, a couple sets of Hogan Apex Persimmons, and a Hogan Apex HB-II putter (pure awesomeness). This all transpired in the course of about 18 months. You will love playing Hogan blades. It really forces you start learning how to swing a club. I would also recommend a book "Ben Hogan: An American Life" by James Dodson should you be looking to learn a bit about the man behind the clubs.

I saw a gorgeous set of Hogan cavity backs in someones bag last week and they looked mint with a wow factor. The ops look great too. I had better just look. LOL Next thing I know I'll have a few sets.

Yep that's what got me started. So far I've done Apex 99, Apex Plus, 2006 Apex Edge (those were hard to find as their not exactly the same as the 03 Spalding version), One Plus, and 66 PC5. Wouldn't mind trying the Apex Grind and Channelback

wouldn't need them all if you were truly looking to play them. to me only the 73 Apex, 84 Apex PC, and 99 Apex are most desirable to actually have "in the bag".

I personal still want the Personals, the 92 Ft Worth, and a pair of Redlines.

Can't add much more than has already been said. Was playing a used set of Hogan Edge for over 20 years. Didn't play much, in fact, went about 15 years not playing at all. In 2014 news broke that Hogan clubs were coming back on the market for 2015. I had recently retired from work. I liked mine and thought I might get some new ones; but could I hit blades? So, I started off with some used Hogan Radials to see if I could play blades...I could and was hooked. Bought Hogan's book "The 5 Lessons Of Golf". Now have so many sets of Hogan iron/woods my wife is going to beat me over the head with them if I buy any more. So I got some Macgregor, Palmer and Titleist and all kinds of woods. I never did buy any of the new Hogans. Why pay $140.00 per club when I can get a whole set of used for that price? I am now 61 years old and enjoying golf more than ever playing with the Men's Senior Association at my favorite local course. I am the only player in the group using old vintage clubs.
