I guess I am a bit confused. Does a flat swing plane equal an inside takeaway? Or does a flat plane start off square to the target line and the hands just don't go as high? The reason I ask is that with my driver, I've been trying to get flatter to eliminate a slice. Instead of getting flatter, I might have just been taking the club to the inside on my takeaway. Sometimes it worked great, awesome trajectory and dead straight. Other times, I sliced the crap out of the ball. Maybe when I tried to get flat, I took it to the inside on the takeaway far too much and ended up coming over the top. Excuse my ignorance, but can someone clear this up? Thanks

The problem with thinking flatter swing is that you will tend to drop the clubhead inside on the takeaway and you will actually end up coming over the top eventhough you feel like you made a flatter swing. If you try to think of a more upright takeaway and let your shoulders do the turning you will only have one place to come from on the downswing and that will be in the slot or slightly inside. Either way a much more powerful swing. Hope that helps a little. Best of luck to you.

I had a problem with over the top - I have been flattening my swing all year (and it could be frustrating when it does not always work).

The pros come from the inside - they also have their back (trailing) elbow tucked into their right side of torso on the downswing.

So if you come up vertical, you will need to drop your hands (at the transition) and your elbow will tuck into your body.

BUT you could also point your back elbow at your back hip at address, so when you take the club away, your elbow will naturally fold against your body on the Backswing - then you don't have to mess with dropping your hands - because your elbow is already tucked and you will be coming from the inside. Try swinging while holding a glove in the back armpit. That will get you to feel it.

That is a great drill I used it when i was first learning. Just make sure you dont get overly conserned with the elbow and let your wrists breakdown.

I'd forget all of the concern about flat vs upright swings, and just keep that right elbow tucked in your side. You can't possibly swing "over the top" (outside in) with your elbow tucked in to your side. Look at Vijay, or even Jim Furyk at impact -- right elbow is against the side. (And we all know that Jim's right arm is all over the place on the back swing and whatnot, which, clearly, doesn't matter in his swing.)

I don't know that you need a "drill" involving holding anything in your armpit. You can FEEL your elbow against your side (or feel that it's NOT against your side), so just do it. Don't get hung up on "pointing" it anywhere -- PUT it there.

Give it a whirl.

the pro's swing LEFT!!!! You see on tv every week!!!

True -- but they're inside, outside to IMPACT, then back inside (and it's the "back inside" part that might look like the whole swing is left. They're certainly not starting outside and cutting across the ball left the whole way...

I just thought I should mention that even though their elbow is against their side both of their arms are straight at impact and not bent for consistency.

Picture this drill, that is if I can describe it correctly. You will need a mirror and two old shafts, PVC pipe or something like that. Set up the two shafts flush against the mirror where one of the shafts matches your shaft angle at address...in other words, setting up and looking back at the mirror you will not see your shaft as it's "covered" by the shaft you have placed against the mirror...does this make sense? As you begin the takeaway, the shaft of the club you are swinging stays "covered" by the other shaft until your hands reach somewhere around your right thigh...then you can go ahead and let your arm rotation begin where the club will work up and around from that point. However, if you take the club back and you see your shaft in the mirror, then you are either too inside or too outside...just cover that shaft on the initial takeaway and that should be a pretty good path. Hope that made sense :smilie_ping:
