Newport National worth the $ over Triggs?

The wife and I are wrapping up our New England golf trip and have played some awesome tracks:

Okemo Valley VT

Taconic MA

Mt. Washington NH

Belgrade Lakes ME

 

I want to finish well. We were looking at Triggs but I see Newport was recommended to me as well.

Tough question, because it is a lot of money. I like both courses but Triggs is really a muni in every sense of the word. I'm supposed to play there Saturday but am going back and forth if I want to because the tee time is 10:30 am, which means it's probably a 5 1/2 hour round at least. If you don't mind paying the extra $$, I'd pick Newport.

I agree with jdl. Triggs is a classic Donald Ross design, but NN will offer you that "awesome track" experience. Also, downtown Newport is fun, with some great restaurants, not to mention the "cottages" you can visit.

Given the others on the list, Triggs would be a letdown. It's not a bad course, but you're not going to drive 4 hours from Belgrade Lakes to Triggs and be pumped about it.

Triggs is a very nice muni course that was designed by D. Ross and kept pretty nice and original, but it's not a great or Wow course like some of the others. It's a really nice course that I recommend to everyone and really like playing, at a great price, but not a resort level course if you're on a golfing trip. Now I want to play NN as well though - guess I need to check it out myself.

If you are a huge Ross fan, Triggs is a neat track. But Newport National is much much better.
