Help needed with iron shaft question

Recommended Posts

With my irons I have a low ball flight. I "got fit" in the beginning of the year and ended up with Callaway XP pro with True Temper XP105 s300. I have been having a tough time hitting these even though I was fit for them. (I know it's my fault for buying them) Cut to last week I was at a course that had a Wilson demo day.... so I went and checked it out. I am in love with the V6. The rep had me try the KBS tour 90 because of my low ball flight. Now I was hitting them much higher but off the toe. He did a quick change and said "hit this". what a difference. I was hitting the 7 a full 10 yards further. I asked him what he did and the shaft was the same except 1/2" longer. It's crazy how the ball flies when you hit it in the center of the face. I am going to order the V6's, but I have a few questions. He didn't have the PX LZ to try, but would I have a hard time with the shaft weight with those? Is the reason I'm hitting the ball so much higher the shaft weight or because I'm hitting it in the center of the face. I just don't trust the place I went for my fitting, but they're the only Wilson guys in the area. I also don't want to be buying another set of shafts I'd like to get it right the first time..... well technically second.

Didn't the rep at the demo day write down your specs ? If so all the guy at the store needs to do is order them.

I can't imagine the TT 105s would launch all that much differently than the V90s but,,,,,,,,, I hit DGS300 and that's supposed to be a low flighted shaft but I hit it plenty high so who knows ?

But you got a shaft (V90) that put the ball on the middle of your club face and gave you excellent distance (I assume better dispersion as well) and you want a different shaft ? :dntknw:

All of the above it true! But the shaft I also wanted to try (PX LZ) he didn't have. I just need to make sure that when I pull the trigger I'm not having to do this all over again for a little while. Or until the next cool toy is released.

It isn't just the light weight or hitting the middle of the club face, but both obviously help. The KBS tour 90 has a more flexible tip designed to help get the ball up. It also will play slightly more flexible at +1/2 inch giving more height.

I'm not sure why you want an LZ if you hit the 1/2 inch overlength 90 quite well. If you do, just go elsewhere and hit it.

Before you go out and purchase an entirely new set, I would recommend finding a club builder and put a 1/2" extension is your current 7I and see if this helps. Should cost about $5 - $7 plus a new grip. Might be worth a try before investing in an entire new setup.

1/2" longer shafts should not make a different regarding impact, unless your tall. Weight might, added length = tad more SW, might. Bend profile for sure will make a difference with tempo.

My new 716CB irons came with DG AMT S300 shafts, stock 1/2" longer than I am use to in PX6.0. I kept loft and lie stock, and had new KBS Tour S, and $-Tapers S installed at same length, but slightly different profile compared to stiff tip PX 6.0.

Played a few times, choked down about 1/2", found center and hitting them really nice. Even my misses turned out good. Without seeing, guessing you're hitting it better because of the shaft profile combined with weight, fits your SS and tempo.
