Muirfield as a twosome

Hey guys,

In the very early planning stages of a golf trip to Scotland with my dad. Was curious about playing Muirfield, as I have done some reading on their website and it appears that they only take tee times for foursomes. Is this a pretty hard and fast rule that they abide by, or are they a bit more lenient than perhaps their website might suggest? I have also read that they will try to pair you with another twosome on that same day if they can, or also that they make you pay for 4 slots even if it is just two golfers. I know that pride themselves as a being a very old fashioned and "traditional" club, so I was just curious for some more info from guys who might have some experience with this.

i believe you have to book and pay for a foursome, but if only two show up, that's fine ... somebody who's played can correct me here, but i asked in another thread about this very situation and the poster said you pay for the foursome, but four don't have to show up ... don't know about them trying to pair you with other groups ...

is it the same for a single golfer ? If I pay the foursome price and show up alone, no problem to play ?

Email the club secretary as a single. If they have an opening, they'll give you a single spot. Have done it a few times now. Don't have to pay for a 4some.

They're far more accommodating than you'd expect...as long as there is availability.

100% agree, as was my experience. The Secretary was more than helpful and made it a great day for me.

I played there in May as a single. I looked at their available dates and times well in advance then, as others have said I contacted the Bookings’ Secretary, Joanna Bent via email. She was extremely helpful and the entire experience was great, despite friends and others saying how stuffy and unwelcoming they are.

If you go to the Club's website, www.muirfield.org.uk, you'll find an email in the Contact Us section, along with a Contact Form you can send from that page. Ms Bent's name is listed there, you might put it to her attention in the title line, but I'm sure it would get to the right person even without that.

Yes, good information. Last year when I was trying to book I checked the website and visitor information but I still had a question or two and not being too patient for email replies, I called. I spoke to Ms. Bent and she later followed up with emails confirming our discussion. Very helpful lady as were all those I encountered. Even the ranger/marshal dressed in Muirfield jacket, white shirt and tie who asked us to pick up the pace, was very friendly. I'm looking for any excuse to get back there.
