Slow play rant

Recommended Posts

I was playing today at a new golf course that hasn't learned to stagger tee times properly to avoid delays. But, many of the delays could have been avoided if people will just play the tees they have the skill for. I witnessed many, I mean many, golfers today playing from the tips when they couldn't break 90 from the reds. I know with hundreds of forum members on here there must be some of those types of players on here. If so, PLEASE tell me why you continually go to the tips and rack up your 100+????? Know you are slowing down play for everyone. Also, if you just mashed your tee shot on a par 5 and your second shot is further out than the shot you just hit, HIT THE FREAKING BALL!!!! This group in front of us waitied on every par 5 and the closest one got was a skulled fwy wood into the sand 75yrds from the green. Thank you...I feel better.

I am a short hitter, so I will lay up nine times out of ten. It really bothers me when we are waiting, I'll lay up, but the other person in my group that just hit his tee shot 30 yard shorter than mine waits. He then proceeds to not even reach where I laid up to.

I agree with you one hundred percent. Slow play is the cancer of golf. ;)

I was bugged the other day, but on the opposite end of this. I was playing solo, walking, with two cart guys behind me. They were hitting about 175 off the tee, and stood in the fairway every time I was near the green on the long holes waving their arms at me to hurry. I'd leave the green, and three shots later they'd be on the green.

I finally just sat down and waved them through, only to have to wait for them on the final 6 holes. I took extra special care to lean on my iron in an extra-bored fashion and make sure they knew I was waiting.

Oh, and I was playing white tees and they were playing blacks. Hitting driver <200 yards. Sheesh.

You know what's just as bad as slow play? The jerks who want to play speed golf. It sucks as a single, I want to keep up pace of play (4 hours), but I don't want to rush, yet invariably I get paired up with the twosome trying to set a land speed record. Why do some people feel the need to see just how fast they can get around the course? I don't give a rat's a** that you have to be in work, home, etc., as long as I am keeping up with the 4 hour pace of play, leave me the hell alone! DON'T PLAY GOLF IF YOU DON'T HAVE 4 HOURS TO SPARE!

I'm not advocating slow play, either. But for Christ's sake, I should be able to get to my ball, check the yardage, take *ONE* practice swing, and properly align myself without feeling like I'm holding up the whole course. Of course I let people play through, if they must...but I just don't see the point of rushing through something that's supposed to be fun. I always assume these guys are "two minute men". ;)

I think I finally know what you guys mean about being pushed... I walked 9 friday after work, I rush to the first tee seeing a group of 3 trying to do the same. I had one ball bounce over my head (the only time he yelled fore), one hit the trees behind me on a dogleg hole, without the trees would have been right on me. and 2 or 3 others that rolled up 10 yards short of me. Oh my time for the 9 was 1:45 from the time i left my car till i got back in it, and that included hitting and chasing provisionals on a couple of holes, and looking for balls as a single.

^^Same thing happened to me this past Saturday. I joined up with a husband and wife twosome when I caught up with them. They were as nice as can be, and both played proper "keep up" golf. We still had to wait on every tee for the foursome in front of us (not their fault, the foursome in front of them was slow). By the 7th hole, a twosome catches up to us.

Now, the one guy hit with me on hole #1-2, before going back to meet his friend. The guy was ok, maybe a bogey golfer. But he and his buddy hit into us on 7, 8, and 9....and had the frakkin' nerve to ask me where it "sounded" like his ball hit in the woods just behind me. I had warned him on 7 & 8 to stop hitting into me, and when he asked me that on 9 I flipped out on him. I used a few choice words, and told him if he and his buddy didn't quit hitting into us, the FIRST thing I'd do is tell the marshal at the turn how he was STEALING, since he didn't pay for a cart but was riding in his buddy's cart. He backed off when he heard that, because he knows he would've been kicked off the course.

I mean, I HATE waiting on every tee as well. But it's part of golf. As long as everyone is reasonably trying to keep up the 4-hour pace, you just have to live with it. The course is not your private playground, and I'll be damned if I'll let a twosome play through if the tee is clogged in front of us.

There's a time and a place. I finished 9 yesterday and waited on the last 5 holes. We were a walking twosome and the group in front was a foursome consisting of 3 juniors and a senior, probably their grandfather. Given that the kids were all around 8-12, I'll cut them a break, but the old man saw us waiting on every tee. There was an entire hole open ahead of them. Is it that ego crushing to let someone play through?

I made the turn on Sunday and the foursome in front of us was sitting down eating hamburgers next to the BBQ the course put up. My foursome was ready to go, and they would not let us play through!

Classic.

That's ridiculous. I would have just teed off, consequences be damned. I'd love them to complain to the ranger that your group teed off while their group was holding up the entire course. Idiots.

All of the courses in my area (except the clueless Philly muni's) have a sign that prohibits groups from taking longer than 10 minutes at the turn. There are usually rangers on the 10th tee. If you're longer than 10 minutes, you're told to tee off immediately or let the next group through.

Shocking...but I actually had a very pleasant experience Tuesday at a public "resort" course. Desert Willow Golf Club in Palm Desert Ca. I haven't played a public course for a year or two, but I had a morning to kill while in the desert for business. I figured I'd get there real early and blow thru 18 by myself, in about 1 1/2 hour max.

I got there late and was put with a threesome with clearly dubious style, skills and etiquette. I'm like "this can't be happeinng"...but here goes!!! They were very nice guys but you know the drill...shirts untucked, dirty cargo shorts (you know the ones with all the huge pockets), drinking smuggled beers by the 3rd hole, tennis shoes, a few range balls in the bag...lol.

Anyways standing on the first tee, I didn't pay much attention to the foursome in front of us, hitting their second shots in the fairway. They were the first group of the day. So me and my motley crew tee off. They go hook- slice-slice, longest drive about 175..from the white tees. I hit a nice opening drive long down the right side from the blues. They all punch their second shots down the fairway in my vicinity. My day gets immediately worse (in my head) when I see the group on the green is four women.

So I brace myself for 5 hours of drunken, early morning military golf.

What happens? The exact opposite!! My hacker buddies are completely aware of how to keep up, and are always in the right place at the right time. The female foursome is the same, and after the 4th or 5th hole they leave us in the dust. I'm amazed as we complete the front nine in 1.5 hours!!! And the female foursome is long gone!!

18 holes in 3:15 with three hackers with a Bud Light buzz following four ladies..sweet
