Weekend getaway in TX

Looking for a reasonably priced weekend golf course where 4 guys can play some golf, stay nearby and relax. Not looking for city destinations. Also most interested in places where there's a patio or outdoor area suitable for whiskey and cigars!

You can't go wrong with Vaaler Creek in Blanco. Close enough to SA and Austin and far away from the city to enjoy the hill country. Absolutely great course and their Stay and Play packages are not bad at all.

Horseshoe Bay. They have an unlimited golf package with 3 of the nicest courses you will play. Myself and a group of 7 friends go every year. Heading down in March this year.

both recs so far are very good, but you sound like the perfect kind of guy who would appreciate Pine Dunes in Frankston. Simple accommodations. Nice big patio, fireplace in front of the condos overlooking the 18th. Ameneties are very simple and very reasonably priced, but the course and practice areas are top notch. Many publications have the course listed as the number 1 track in tx.

I've been seeing deals online for stay and play packages starting at $100 pp. Considering weekend green fee is normally like $85, it is a good deal.

Valaar Creek is a good recommendation, as is Pine Dunes.

The Links at Land's End in Yantis has some stay and play packages as well that I think are pretty good. Fun course on the lake.

Don't mind playing the same course, Lajitas for a desert/mountain course, Pine Dunes if you want the piney woods feel. Definitely Horseshoe Bay if you want to play different courses. That would be my pick. La Cantera or the JW Marriott and the TPC San Antonio could be a couple other options with two courses each and could even do both places in the same trip.

HSB is always fun and you get 3 courses to play. I have always heard Pine Dunes is great but have never made it up there yet.

Agree. Goat track maybe a little harsh, but definitely a disappointment from what it used to be.

Go figure, Garden Valley goes down hill but stays open....Twin Lakes is perfection, and closes.

I guess it's been something like 4-5 years since I've been there. It was in nice shape for quite a few years. Sad to hear.

I'm out of touch. Didn't know Twin Lakes closed, either. We used to do 3-day trips playing Pine Dunes, GV, and Twin Lakes while staying at GV. Sometimes Links at Lands End was in the mix.

Make Lands End part of the trip. I’m bias due to being a member but everyone I’ve talked to for the last 2 years have said GV is damn near a goat track. That’s just going on what people have told me though. Lands End is in fantastic shape and always will be since the new owners took over.

Garden Valley needs someone who knows how to maintain greens Several of them have a lot of disease and #6 green is temporary. The real one is history and they're reworking it.

3 or so of the bunkers needs refubed also. They wont drain water.

Fairways are in great shape.

Some good suggestions here.

Lajitas is a fabulous trip, a little more resort & a lot more expensive. Golf course is very good; it's done by Lanny Wadkins, and is pure resort golf. Big fairways, some incredible drop shots, beautiful vistas. Stars at night are out of this world (it's in a light-controlled section of the US), Terlingua chili is fantastic, and you can go try to see the Marfa Lights.

Pine Dunes is more rustic, quiet, grill your own beef & bring your own Scotch kind of place at a very reasonable price. Golf course is also very good, done by Jay Morrish; it's more penal & definitely a better match play course than Lajitas. At night you can drive to nearby Frankston or Palestine for dinner, or bring your own steaks & grill them there.

For a guys trip, I personally prefer Pine Dunes. If wives are involved, they'll enjoy Lajitas more.

FYI, Lajitas is ranked #20 in Texas by the DMN & is the highest ranked Public in the state. Pine Dunes is 33 and is the number 3 public. Number 2 is the Barton Creek Fazio Foothills course in Austin, but it's closed for a renovation this year.
