Tiger sure says some funny things...

Ok, first off I want to say that Tiger is my favorite golfer so I'm not a Tiger-hater despite what this topic is about.

Eventhough I like watching Tiger play, I find his comments and interviews pretty annoying lately. For example:

"I feel confident taking the driver out on almost every hole knowing that I can hit the fairway."

Does he think less than 40% hit at East Lake is a lot of fairways? What about his season average of below 60%? C'mon at least be honest and say "I hit my driver because I hit it 70-80 yards farther than anyone else. I hope I hit the fairway, but it doesn't matter because I can play out of any lie that any course can throw at me." That would be more accurate.

How about at Harding Park when asked about driving the green after Daly did? He said "I'm getting old as I'm almost 30 and I couldn't possibly hit it that far" The next day, Woods carries the green no problem. Modesty?..I dunno. He keeps saying that he can't hit it out there like he used to when he was younger. Does anyone remember him hitting 380 yard drives in 2000? He says he can't keep up with the young guys anymore. Like who? Scott Hend? Scott is older than him. Even before the equipment change..was anyone really blowing it by Tiger? I don't think so. And the guys who were ahead of him in driving distance in 2003? All older than him except Sergio.

And what about calling Michael Jordan "M"?? Maybe I'm jealous because I don't get to play hoops with "M" or am not in the tight circle of people that get to call him "M"...but c'mon Tiger..you can say "Michael" when referring to him. That would sound a little less arrogant to us mere mortals who don't play basketball with "M". Maybe it's just me. I know Conan O'Brien gave him a little shot for it.

Basically the point I'm trying to make is, if he is going to be calling Michael Jordan "M", then he should also say..."I'm the longest driver on tour and the longest driver in history including John Daly(we talking good PGA touring pros only..no Jason Zuback, no Scott Hend). Young guys?? Like who? I hit my driver over 350 and my 3 wood over 290. I hit it farther now than when I was 20. I miss a lot of fairways but I don't care. I can hit out of the rough better than anyone in history. I am one of the young guys. I'm not even 30 yet. My main competition (Els, Phil, Goose, VJ) are all older than me...wait..I'm the young gun!

Ok, I'm done. Sorry "T", just had to get that off my chest.

I absolutely agree with you. I have been proposing what you have said for a long time now. I love some of the examples that you use. I would also like to add that, for example, after the playoff with John Daly, when asked about him, he said something like "Oh well Johnny's a great player and I just got lucky enough to beat him there" when he really should have said "I'm confident that I can beat John Daly any day of the week and I can't see myself losing to him heads up on my worst day."

I think Tiger is afraid that he will be portrayed in a negative light as cocky perhaps, but, quite frankly, I am getting sick of this politically correct bullxxxx he is feeding us

Whatever Tiger does or says, there are people criticizing him for it.

BTW, JD drove that green at Harding Park when the tees were back. The next day the tees were moved up, and Tiger drove the green.

Agree with much of the post. I have to say I was always perplexed throughout the 2004 season to hear how Tiger was "close" and that he "felt really good about his game" when it was, in comparison to recent times, a bit of a mess...

The driving thing is interesting. I honestly think, with the changes in equipment that have given everyone a boost in length, that Tiger, pound for pound, is shorter than he was ten tears ago. If you look a where he drives now, in comparison to the field, the fact is the gap has narrowed, and he is not, relatively speaking, as long as he was. Every man and his dog hits it 300 now, so Tiger's 325-330 average means he is 30 yards or so ahead of the field. He hit it 330 in the late 90s, using a steel headed Cobra or Titleist driver with a 130 gram 43.75" steel shaft. He carries the ball a lot further now, but so does everyone else; that's the product of the modern balls and drivers. No longer does he routinely hit it 40-50 yards past his playing partners as he used to.. Length-wise, he's still fantastically long, but, it has to be said, he is a worse driver now than he was. If you don't think so, dig out the tapes of the '97 Masters or any of his 2000 play.

I agree with the rest of your post that he is overly PC in lot of what he says. I don't know if saying you could beat someone 99% of the time would necessarily be the done thing, but I certainly think he could be more honest and candid about his play and aspects of his game and swing.

Never heard the Michael Jordan thing, so I can't comment.

I think most fans find it frustrating when Woods plays such electrifying golf at times and then patronises us all with some of his lame interviews, dodging any difficult questions with his pre-prepared PC non-answers.

I think most sports fans want to hear their favourites speak their minds, despite some of the flak they get for it (Vijay and Phil spring to mind)

Tiger should take a lesson from Terrell Owens on speaking his mind.

That's funny.

Ya sure, one lesson from T.O., that should be the right dose. But no more than that.

It is hard being Tiger, Damn if he does, Damned if he doesn't. He gets critized for speaking his mind and critized for being more conservative. Can't have it both ways.

The thing I hate is how he dodges so many questions and gives rambling b.s. answers (especially to ?s regarding Vijay or Phil). It's been said before... Tiger has perfected the art of speaking and saying absolutely nothing!

Funny responses guys. I'm glad to know it's not just me. I just thought of another thing...what's up with talking in the third person when he's mad?

eg. " Dammit Tiger! Don't do that!" or " Ahh Tiger, what are you doing!!

that's a typical saying after he hits a bad shot. He's sounds like a little spoiled rich kid. Whatever the case, I still like tuning in to watch him.

Imagine if he talked in third person when he bombed one? "Tiger, you da man!" or sank a putt? "Tiger, that got in the hole!!"

Now that would be funny!

We have all done that when we are pissed at ourselves. Spoiled rich kid? Come on now, you do realize there is a difference between speaking in the 3rd person at a press conference or an interview and when you are yelling at yourself.
