Orange County Private Courses- Coto vs. Dove

For those who are members or played both, I'm curious which you would chose. I don't play as much these days so I'm mainly looking at a place that is very Junior friendly for my son. I'm not sure how much Dove costs, but I do know Coto is about $12,000 initial and $940 a month. My friend just joined there and the staff appears to be very friendly and their practice range and short game area look really good. I don't have much experience with Dove.

 

I just need a club within 20 minutes of Irvine, which really narrows down the options.

Haven't played either course, but one recommendation I have it to make sure the course is reasonably walkable. This way your junior can play the course without needing a chaperone to drive a cart as he gets older. Good luck!

Dove is a far better golf course. One you’d be happy to play daily. Far better conditioned greens than coto and less members so getting out is pretty easy. Coto is ok once or twice a year. Weekly I’d be bored. Just my two cents. Played approximately 200+ Rounds at Dove and I’d say 25 rounds at each if the coto courses.

Thanks for that. I've played Coto about 5 times now and could not score once. I'm not sure what about the courses, but they do not set up for me at all. Maybe because I hit it all over the place with driver. LOL

 

I played Yorba Linda CC yesterday and really enjoyed the course and lay-out. I think they want $15,000 down and $605/month with no minimums.

 

I need to get out and play Dove again. It's been a few years now. Thanks for the input.

Just played El Niguel after their renovation and its very solid. Definitely worth checking out as well. I know Mesa Verse just completed their renovation as well. Will be checking that out in the next few weeks.

I would opt for either Yorba Linda, Seacliff or Marbella (all AGC courses). Then you have option for little extra pay to play at other AGC courses.

 

IMO, I like Coto better than Dove.

I live in YL and didn't realize YLCC was that reasonable. Another one in the area people are joining is Alta Vista CC in Placentia. A buddy of mine (from Irvine) joined some weekdays-only deal for his daughter. He too was looking for a good practice facility. He mentioned they had a great chipping/pitching area.

I used to be a member at Dove and have played both courses. I personally think Dove is a better track but with Coto you have the option of 2 courses and their clubhouse/facilities are better.

 

Neither clubs are walkable which would be great if they were.

 

I've heard the same thing about Alta Vista and they offer weekday memberships too.

not sure if you decided either way, but i believe b/c coto is a clubcorp place, it's membership is arguably too big and it affects pace of play and ability to even get on the golf course. something to look into

Recently I played at Dove. My goodnesss, it was way harder than Coto; narrow fairway and rock hard and fast green. I will need redemption round.
