Rams Hill to Torrey Pines, where to stay overnight?

Two of us are planning to play at Rams Hill on a Wednesday and Torrey Pines on Thursday, so wondering where would be the best place to stop enroute ? We could finish RH by say 3pm and have a mid morning tee time at TP. It appears to be a 2 hour drive but looking at the map a little mountainous. I have zero local knowledge of the area.

are you sure Rams Hill is open?

In past years they have closed in the summer

Rams is definitely a no go right now. My pops Marshall’s out there, we played mothers days weekend and the season was close to over.

This is later in the year - November. Too hot now anyhow.

Ram's will open back up beginning of November. Should be back to pristine shape by Thanksgiving.

There's little reason to try and split up the drive back by staying halfway, and it will only make the morning drive on into Torrey miserable as that will be the direction of most morning commute traffic. There's not a thing to do in Ramona, and you'll hate the drive from there to Torrey in the morning. Instead, I'd suggest heading into either Mission Valley, Downtown, La Jolla, or the University Town Center (UTC) area and stay there, and then you'll have a much easier drive to Torrey in the morning. Heading all the way from Borrego you'll be going against the evening commute traffic so you'll have a fairly easy drive.

 

Mission Valley has a lot of mid-level hotels, and a fair number of decent casual restaurants. Not much in way of nightlife there, but you're only about 10 minutes to the downtown night scene if you want.

 

Downtown has a lot of mid to upper level hotels, and you're right in the middle of scores of restaurants and bars, close to the harbor...it's where most of the night action is if you're looking for that. The drive from there is fairly easy to get to Torrey, although it will clog up as you get closer to the Torrey area as there is a lot of biotech and tech industry in the Torrey area.

 

La Jolla has a number of hotels to choose from in the mid to upper levels, and if you stay in the La Jolla village area you have a lot of restaurants in walking distance. You only have a 10 minute drive near the coast to Torrey, so you can sleep in, have breakfast, and get to the course with little stress.

 

UTC is close to La Jolla and also has a lot of hotels and is only 10 minutes from Torrey. They've been adding a lot of restaurants in that area, so you have some good options.

Agree with Clambake. Get as close to Torrey the day before as possible. He has given good suggestions. RH to TP is an easy and fairly scenic drive. I remember passing through a pine Forest and by a lake. All two lane though.

Thanks for that advice. Have booked a place in Sorrento. Hopefully we can get a tee time at Torrey around 11am so we can get up to LA for dinner.

LA dinner might be 9pm. Torrey will be 5 hours and then at least 3 hours of traffic to LA.

Alternatively, you can book an earlier tee time since the days will be shorter in November. You'll still finish if you start at 11am but the sunset is typically around 5pm or so.

Going from rams hill to Torrey will make Torrey feel like a goat track. Rams hill is probably the best course in san diego county sans a club membership.

 

If they would just blast a direct road through the mountains, there would be so much amazing golf in borrego. The drive is just for s***.

 

I always tell people, Torrey is just a bucket list course. Nothing special. The layout sucks, but views are good. I honestly would never play there if I dismt have a resident card.

Yeah I would skip Torrey but my buddy wants to do it and I have already picked Rams Hill.
