Rextar Golf Balls

I want a box of old school Rextar Golf Balls, the ones Nick Faldo and Ray Floyd Used. Anyone got a dusty box laying around?

This ball from what i can remember, spins like a mofo.

if not, What ball had the most spin of all time?

They were a good ball (I played them for a while) but if you're looking to mess around, any old balata spins way more than any four piece or double-covered ball.

 

The old Maxfli HTs and Titleist balatas spun a lot off wedges, as did the old Slazenger balatas.

 

Best combo of all time was Ping square grooves and a zinthane-covered Spalding Tour Edition IMO.

 

I haven't got any brand new ones, but I've got a few dozen (now somewhat discoloured) balatas in my practice bag that have been in there for nigh on 20 years.

the royal maxfli golf ball from japan,was by far the best ball going around at the time in distance and spin.

A friend of mine had a sleeve of 3 of these that had been sitting around in the back of his car since the Faldo heydeys.

 

We took them out for a little foursomes action round Prince's (a long and tedious links course in Kent in the UK) in 30mph winds.

I don't think that seasoning the ball for 10 years in the back of an Astra did them much good but they were pretty much unplayable. Yes they spin like crazy but to a degree where you think a three iron into the wind is going to balloon and come back over your head!

 

I can't believe we used to get it round with balata balls. Thank the Good Lord for urethane and the Pro V1.

I saw a sleeve on Ebay not long ago I had thought about getting them for a trip down memory lane but decided against it. This was my all time favorite ball the spin that it generated was just amazing.

Nothing I have ever hit has spun more than a Tour Balata Low Trac. I found a unopened sleeve in an old box. They have to be near 20 years old.

I would love to get some brand new wound balls. In fact if anyone has any I would be very interested in buying them. IMO the Maxfli RM spun the most of any ball.

I agree.I remember when Tiger was close to turning pro Greg Norman had a talk about endorsements; balls in particular. The Tour Edition was nearly the downfall of the Shark. The ball carried way too much spin and he was adapting his swing to match the ball. Not a good combo.

Most amateurs would die to be able to spin the ball backward, but for a pro there's no problem as frustrating as spinning the ball too much. During the mid-'80s I played the Tour Edition ball, which spun like no ball before or since. The third hole at Augusta National was a nightmare for me. There just was no place to land the ball and keep it on the green. Once, not knowing what else to do, I landed my ball on the right side of the green and spun it sideways 90 feet to the left, to where the pin was. The Tour Edition helped me win the 1986 British Open at Turnberry, because the greens were like rocks, and it was the only ball that would hold. But it killed me in majors in America, including more than one Masters, because the damn thing spun so much.

Softest best ball I ever played, to me these even made my Titleist Tour Balata's sound hard. Another soft ball was the Balata DDH.

You can find them on Ebay . . . brand new sleeves of old Tour Balatas for about $10 or so.

The Spalding Tour Edition was a great ball. But for high handicappers it spun so much that they lost distance. It made a really funny sound when you putted with it also. But I played it off and on for a few years. The Titleist Balata Low trajectory was a really great ball. I loved 100 compression golf balls. The Maxfli Balata HT and the regular one went great in the wind, but it had funny dimples and really didn't put straight on a good greens. It was said that for every month that a balata golf ball sat on the shelf then it lost about one yard in distance. So if you hoarded them like people do with brands I have read about on this forum. Then next summer you would be losing distance. They weren't so great if they stayed in your trunk for periods of hot and cold. When we played in late november or early feb many years ago. Then you would get a hand warmer and put the ball in it. And switch out every other hole. A warm ball went farther. When it got down below 40 degrees then everyone played rockflites as it made no difference. If you mishit a ball it stung like all get outs. What really tickles me the most is the fact that the club I hit in 1986 for 150 yards was a 45 degree lofted 9 iron with a balata golf ball. Here it is 21 one years later and I hit my 43 degree lofted 9 iron with a Prov1x the same distance. Thats a number of pounds, lots of cigarettes, more than a few beers, a couple of divorces, diabetes and a couple of cancers later. Plus the legal distance of a golf ball has gone from 290 to over 300 plus yards. I do hate to look at the pictures of me wearing the shoes with the tassles on them though, and the white tennis shorts that came barely below your pockets.

Oh my gosh, I actually found one of those in the lake by my local golf course. Haven't used it yet, but now I will.

I've got 3 sleeves in a dark corner of the garage somewhere - from my recollection they spun like crazy, the only ball i could get to screw back on my local greens (tried all the alternatives, Titleist , Spalding etc etc). they had graphite in them, what purpose i don't know.

 

They also marked up easily.

 

I might dig some out and try them again - i bet they'll feel real soft compared to modern stuff !
