Ben Hogan Clubs - What Type?

Mems

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I can't figure out what my Ben Hogan's are. I think they are a Ben Hogan 1956 Precision Iron Set. I am not sure if they are 1st edition, 2nd edition, or something else.

Does anyone know? Is so, can you please post a link to a source on this (I didn't see anything like this online)?

Attached are pictures of the 9 iron, including some numbers on the clubs and a sticker around the shaft of the club. The other clubs look the same.

My thanks in advance for your help!

Maybe Teevons will answer up--- He told me something on that about the boxed grooves. I know mine are 54 or 55 because they do not have the boxed grooves like yours. I do know those shafts are the TT Rocket green same as mine

Thanks for the input so far.

I did some more digging and found what I think are some identical clubs at benhoganvintage.com, the 1955 Precision Iron Set 2/9 (URL: [https://benhoganvintage.com/shop/ben-hogan-vintage-golf-iron-set---the-1955-precision-iron-set-2-9---all-original-336p.html](https://www.benhoganvintage.com/shop/ben-hogan-vintage-golf-iron-set---the-1955-precision-iron-set-2-9---all-original-336p.html "https://benhoganvintage.com/shop/ben-hogan-vintage-golf-iron-set---the-1955-precision-iron-set-2-9---all-original-336p.html")

These clubs look the same to me. Can anyone confirm? I am not sure what exactly to look for. The colored bands (grey, white, and red) look the same, as do the grooves.

I only have 2-9 irons, and the 1955 set only has clubs 2-9. I am not sure if an equalizer came with the set. The only thing that seems off is the red numbering (2-9 on the heads of the clubs). I assume the color can wear off after use?

My thanks!

The clubs in that link do not have boxed grooves like in your irons.

What do you mean by boxed grooves? I couldn't find anything about what those are online. Thanks for the help!

Your irons have vertical grooves cut into the face at each end of the horizontal grooves, effectively "boxing" them in. The irons in your link have are "frosted" in the groove are but don't appear to have the vertical grooves cut into the face.

Your clubs are 1954 Precision experimentals, with the boxed grooves, long hosel and curling marks at the top of the hosel. I know Tim (Teevons) has 1954 Precision experimental woods on sale every once in a while.

Not sure if they are worth what Henrik is selling them for (all of his Hogan stuff on his site and on ebay seem extremely overpriced), but still a very nice set to have. More details can be found here:

IsaacK, could be. The club you link to is missing the red band. Then again, it is an experimental.

Any idea why my clubs are labeled S431 instead of experimental?
